A Promise of Forever and a Gentle Kiss

"Burn down the entire world?" I echoed, my voice barely above a whisper.

Rhys's eyes darkened with intensity as he leaned forward, his fingers still tracing delicate patterns on the back of my hand. Each touch sent tingles up my arm.

"Yes," he said firmly. "That's what it felt like when I first saw you—like my entire world had shifted."

The string lights above us cast a golden glow across his sharp features, softening them. I'd never seen him look so vulnerable, so open.

"Even though you rejected me?" I couldn't help asking.

He winced slightly. "I was a fool. The biggest fool." His thumb pressed gently against my pulse point. "I've wasted so much time fighting what I knew was true from the beginning."

The night air felt charged around us. Beyond the rooftop, the moon cast silver light over the trees, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of roses and coffee between us.

"And what was true?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.
