Jealous Whispers and a Tender Vow

I barely had time to wave goodbye to my friends as Orion guided me firmly toward his car. His hand on my lower back felt like a brand, both comforting and possessive. The meeting with Rhys had left me rattled, though I'd tried not to show it. His engagement announcement to Faye still rang in my ears like an off-key note.

"You okay?" Orion asked as he opened the passenger door for me.

"Fine," I lied, sliding into the leather seat.

The car smelled like him—sandalwood and something wild that reminded me of mountain air. Usually, it comforted me. Today, it felt suffocating.

As soon as Orion pulled away from the curb, the atmosphere in the car changed. I could feel Beta Blaise's eyes boring into me from the backseat. He'd been silent during the drive over, but now he cleared his throat.

"Did you know?" His voice cut through the silence like a knife.

I turned slightly. "Know what?"

"About Faye's engagement to Knight."
