"I'm not afraid of the darkness anymore," I stated firmly, meeting Rhys's intense gaze head-on. The lighter's flame flickered between us, casting eerie shadows across his handsome face. Those shadows used to terrify me—just like he did.

With deliberate slowness, I reached up and flicked the lighter closed, plunging us into darkness. I heard his sharp intake of breath, clearly surprised by my boldness.
