A possessive growl reverberated through the room, cutting through the ambient noise of the party. I broke away from Orion's kiss to see Rhys glaring at us, his eyes burning with fury. Without a word, he turned and stormed out of the party, leaving Faye behind.
I should have felt triumphant. Victorious. Instead, something hollow settled in my chest as I watched him leave. The kiss with Orion had been nice – technically perfect even – but it lacked the raw electricity, the soul-deep connection I'd experienced with Rhys.
*Stop it,* I scolded myself. *He rejected you. Humiliated you. Broke you.*
My wolf whined softly. *Mate...*
*He's not our mate anymore,* I insisted internally, though the bond pulsing between us said otherwise.
"Elara?" Orion's voice pulled me back to reality. His silver eyes searched my face with concern. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine," I lied, forcing a smile. "Just...overwhelmed by everything today."
