I followed Max Bennett back to his nearby villa. As I sat in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, I still felt somewhat dazed.

He knelt before me with a first aid kit, his eyes full of concern and pain.

"That coward! I thought he was just too afraid to defy his family's arrangements while wanting to enjoy the benefits of the family business. I never imagined he would actually lay hands on you! I must have been blind to once consider such a person a friend!"

I came to my senses and studied his face carefully.
