Outside the game, a sharp, prolonged beep echoed through the monitoring room. A new note flashed onto the screen, startling everyone.
Inside the game, A.D. tensed. "What's that?"
"Oh no!" Jane's voice crackled frantically over the comms.
"Now what?" Sharleen cried, a tremor in her voice.
"The game is showing '1 day'!" Jane announced, her voice strained. "A 24-hour timer has started!"
"Everyone, we have limited time!" A.D. commanded, his voice sharp with urgency. "Gather all information and get back to the announcement hall before 24 hours are up." He then called out to Suzanne. "Suzi, come fast! There's no time to describe everything now!"
Chapter :The Rising Tide
They gathered in the hall, the atmosphere thick with apprehension. A.D. had already prepared a makeshift stage near the highest window, a precarious climb from the floor. Michael, one of the watchmen, stared up at it, a mixture of disbelief and fear in his eyes. "What the hell is this?"
Just then, George and his group, now joined by two girls who were also game players, swaggered into the hall, wielding hockey sticks like weapons. "You con artist!" George spat at A.D. "You think I'm a fool? You'll regret what you did to me," he added, his gaze lingering on Sharleen.
Sharleen took a step forward, her fists clenched, but David held her back. A.D. tried to reason with George, but his words were cut short by a deafening blast from the direction of the lab and the corner of the college. A low rumble shook the hall, and a collective gasp filled the air.
"What was that?" David exclaimed, his voice tight with fear.
A.D. spoke urgently into his mic. "Jane, what happened?"
"I don't know!" Jane replied, her voice frantic. "It just happened! The timer... the timer is gone!"
"Gone!" Sharleen repeated, her face pale. "What do you mean, gone?" She grabbed A.D.'s arm, shaking him. "A.D.!"
"Huh? Yeah," A.D. stammered, his mind racing.
"What are you thinking?" Sharleen demanded.
"Everyone, climb up!" A.D. shouted, pointing to the makeshift stage.
"But why?" Suzanne asked, her voice trembling.
"The game has started," A.D. said grimly. He turned to George and his group. "You all, climb up!"
"Huh! What? It's just water, nothing serious. We all know how to swim," George sneered, though a flicker of unease crossed his face.
"It's not that easy," A.D. warned.
"What!" George exclaimed.
At that moment, a strange, mournful tone filled the hall, then abruptly ceased. A.D. glanced back at the entrance, his eyes widening. He scrambled onto the makeshift stage, gesturing wildly. "If you want to live, climb up! They're coming!"
"Who's coming?" David asked, his voice shaking.
"Sharks," A.D. said simply.
One of the girls from George's group, her bravado vanishing, stared at A.D. in horror. "Sharks?"
"Yes," A.D. confirmed.
Without hesitation, she began to climb. "Life is important to me," she said, her voice trembling.
Seeing her, the rest of George's group, their arrogance replaced by fear, scrambled to follow.
