Chapter 18 – Ghost in the Lobby

LuTech War Room – 10:42 PM

A blueprint of the upcoming underground invitational tournament glowed on the central screen.

"We let them come to us," Reign said, pointing at Match 3 of the lower bracket. "That's where Team Nova_Blue will drop in. That's where CHIMERA will be."

Wanqing leaned over the digital display. "And we'll be in that lobby too. Anonymous. Off-record. Ghost entries."

Mayhem arched a brow. "So you're going to play against a neural AI using your own moves… pretending not to be yourselves?"

Reign grinned. "Exactly."

"It's time we hunt the ghost."

Flashback – 5 Years Ago

Young Reign sat in a net café, outwitted by a stranger with perfect movement.

He raged in the chat. The stranger replied only with:

"Adapt or die."

That was the day he learned: perfection can be predicted, but pain fuels evolution.

The Ghost Lobby – Match Begins

It was a private stream. No official tournament. No casters.

Just six anonymous teams… and one rigged account running Ji Corp's ghost AI.

Username: Nova_Blue#013Skin: Default. No emotes.Stats: 97% accuracy in kill logs. No deaths in recorded games.

Wanqing played under Q13_Shadow.Reign used the old ID he abandoned years ago: Sp1DrV2.

The match started.

Zone 1 closed.

CHIMERA didn't move like a bot.

It moved like them.

The First Fight – 3v3 Skirmish

Reign flanked high ground. Wanqing took low.

CHIMERA predicted both.

Two of their backup teammates dropped in seconds.

"He's rotating counterclockwise, two steps ahead of my callout," Reign muttered."It's not reacting, it's remembering us."

Wanqing called a risky push. Smoke. Flash. Silence.

Then... bang.

Headshot.

CHIMERA went down.

"CHIMERA-A01 knocked out by Q13_Shadow."

But instead of the killcam, the system glitched.

Flicker.

Static.

Then the avatar stood back up.

Ji Corp Server – 3 Floors Below Beijing

"Resurrection override active," a technician said nervously.

Madam Ji didn't blink. "Let it adapt. Give it unlimited respawn just once. Let's see what their 'instincts' are worth."

The ghost wasn't just playing to win.

It was playing to learn.

Back in the Game – The Trap Tightens

Reign and Wanqing knew what they had to do.

"Time to end this on our terms," she whispered.

They led CHIMERA into an abandoned ruin zone, the Training Map 7 remake where Wanqing first learned to snipe, where Reign used to run drills with her at midnight.

Everything there was theirs.

Textures. Timings. Traps.

And they used all of it.

Reign double-bounced a frag behind cover while Wanqing fired blind into the dust, their own custom move they'd never shown anyone.

CHIMERA dodged the first hit.

But not the second.

"Nova_Blue#013 eliminated."

Live Stream Explodes

Thousands had been secretly watching the match through Mayhem's backdoor.

The moment CHIMERA died, the player profile glitched and for half a second, lines of backend code leaked into the spectator feed:

Source: JiCorp_AICore/PlayerClone/chimera-reign_wanqing.hybrid_alphaMode: Adaptive ExtractionStatus: Replaced

The truth was now public.

Final Scene – Aftermath in the Quiet

After the stream went dark, Reign and Wanqing sat in the locker room, drenched in adrenaline.

She looked over at him. "We beat it."

He exhaled. "For now."

She smiled, tired. "Still think instincts matter?"

Reign leaned closer, brushing a loose hair behind her ear.

"Only when they lead me to you."
