Chapter 5

Just like I figured, the Council meeting was a total powder keg.

Victor tried to downplay Kaelan's accomplishments, but with Dad and me pushing back, Kaelan’s contributions finally got the credit they deserved.

By the time the meeting wrapped up, most of the Elders showed clear support for Kaelan.

Victor’s face got darker and darker. He needed a more drastic move.

Sure enough, the next morning, the whole pack was in an uproar.

“Victor and Selena!”

“They’re having a baby!”

“What’s this mean for the upcoming bonding ceremony?”

I was in the middle of discussing ceremony details with Mom when I heard all the gossip and immediately went on high alert.

Mom’s face was grim. “This isn’t a good sign, Elara.”

"I know," I said, keeping it cool. "But don't worry, I totally saw this coming."

I made a beeline for the medical bay and found Victor right there with Selena while she was getting an exam.

Elder Una, our pack’s most senior healer, was examining her.
