Zerra widened her eyes and snapped at him. "Don't speak nonsense."
However, many eyes were fixed on them at this moment, watching her with vigilant eyes. Henry, who was also nearby, heard Daniel's words. His eyes shifted and his lips curled up slightly.
"That's right. Don't speak nonsense, Daniel." Henry spoke as if he was on Zerra's side, but his eyes were telling different things. "On what basis can you accuse someone like that?"
A woman by his side, who seemed to be an ability user, scrunched her face in displeasure. "How about we check this young lady?"
She turned to Daniel. "Do you see any injury on her?"
Daniel's eyes flashed with some hesitation, but the moment he saw the approaching Cassias, Nyra, and Laziel after hearing the commotion, he hardened his heart and pointed to Zerra's hand. "I saw some red marks on her wrist. She might have gotten bitten by some insects."
At this moment, Nyra arrived, and her eyes flashed sternly as they landed on Zerra. "What happened here?"
The woman scrutinized Nyra from head to toe. When her eyes landed on Cassias, there was a flash of surprise, but it quickly disappeared and was replaced with pity.
She cleared her throat and pointed to Zerra. "This young lady seems to be in the same group as you, right? Daniel saw that she has some wounds on her wrist and it's highly likely that the wounds were from mutated insect bites."
Zerra couldn't help but touch her own wrist skeptically. She hadn't felt anything earlier. The blood on her hands was from digging the crystal core from zombies' brains.
"Let's just check her." The woman approached Zerra and was about to pull her hand when Nyra stood in front of her younger sister and blocked her.
"Let us do it ourselves," Nyra told her. She yanked Zerra out of the scene and pulled her closer to their group. Rolling her long sleeves, they found some blotches of blood on her hand.
Nyra used her cloth to rub the blood off her wrist, and they saw some torn skin. Zerra had indeed gotten injured. On top of the dots of redness because of insect bites, blood seeped through the scab that Nyra had accidentally rubbed off.
Zerra winced, not realizing there was a wound on her wrist. She originally thought it was merely blood crust from the zombies…
Well, was the plot screwing with her again and she was going to turn into a zombie earlier? Was her plot armor gone now?
Everyone's expression became subtle. Daniel had a flash of gloating look, and their eyes locked for a moment. When his eyes met Cassias', he jolted and looked away.
The woman had been standing nearby ever since Nyra started checking Zerra's hand. She crossed her arms over her chest. "Look, the wound and then the mutated insects' bites."
Henry's lips curled up into a satisfied smirk, and he told them, "She has to go to the hospital room to be closely watched and examined."
Clearing his throat, he acted like he cared about Zerra. "Don't worry, young lady, you might even awaken some kind of power. Do you want me to escort you?"
Nyra's face was twisted in a slight frustration, her eyes telling Zerra that once again she had been making trouble. "No need. We will bring her there."
"I will bring her there." Cassias opened his mouth and grabbed Zerra's hand before anyone else could. He turned and told the pair of siblings. "You two, continue with the mission operation here."
After he said that, he softly dragged the confused Zerra away. On the trip there, the atmosphere was oddly quiet. Zerra thought that Cassias might be angry because she was making trouble?
She put back her pitchfork into her inner space after making sure none was looking.
"How did you get hurt?" Cassias turned to her upon sensing a shift in her direction, discovering that her pitchfork was gone.
Zerra bit her lip. She really didn't know. It was also frustrating.
"I fell. It wasn't from the zombies," She said confidently. She did fall a few times when avoiding the zombies heading her way, although Cassias took down most of those creatures.
The insect bites weren't like those rats and the effect could be handled easily by ability users, but they didn't know she had space ability yet.
People were naturally paranoid. When Daniel was announcing her injury, he also wanted to limit her movement and used people's fear of unpredictability to corner her. And it worked.
"Did you give a gun to Daniel?" She immediately shifted the topic in an annoyed tone.
"Yes." He readily admitted.
Zerra's mouth twitched, not quite understanding his reason. He gave someone like Daniel a gun, but she only got a pitchfork, hmph! "Why?"
Cassias' eyes flashed. "He originally didn't want to move out to another room, so he asked for a gun in exchange."
"Oh." Zerra snorted unhappily.
Not long after, they arrived at the area where they locked the bitten people and closely watched their development. Once those people turned into zombies, they would be executed. That way, the number of casualties could be controlled.
Even if they were unwilling to end the lives of people they once knew personally, they had no choice. The moment they turned into zombies, everyone acquiesced that those people were considered dead.
Whatever it was taking over their bodies, some sort of virus, it had disrespected the deceased.
"I will enter by myself." Zerra told him, a bit impatient to get away from the male lead. Whenever they were present, she always got unlucky. Indeed, she could never rely on them, her natural nemesis.
Cassias didn't stop her when she walked toward one room to inform the doctor and for registration. However, the moment she opened the door, she was stunned.
The doctor was clutching his arm, groaning painfully. There were many zombies around him, all which were wearing dirty medical staff attire. What had happened here?
Zerra's impulsive thoughts flashed for a moment. Since this round will be the same anyway, maybe she should just let them bite her for real and turn into a zombie sooner?
She walked inside, like she was hypnotized.
Zombies immediately swarmed over.
