Chapter 31: The Zombie Attack Scene

Even though they knew that the base in the Capital was more likely safer, they didn't make a hasty decision to head there directly.

On top of a lot of people turning into zombies, there were also the after effects of natural disasters. Many roads were blocked due to fallen trees or buildings. Some even got flooded with water reaching above people's chest.

Luckily, this city had higher elevation than other cities. Thus, the endless rains during the start of the apocalypse flow to other places. So, the city that they were currently in was one of the safest ones, or so they thought…

Until the news of the zombie attack reached people's ears.

"Organize the ability users and soldiers to the scene of attack now. Quick!" Darren immediately ordered. "Since some of you are already here, come with us!"

Henry didn't want to be left behind. He gave similar orders to his subordinates. Because of today's incident, his prestige was destroyed a bit. Maybe if his people could handle the zombie attack better than Darren's team, he could restore his dignity…

Some hesitated about the order, mostly the ability users who just awakened their power, but they eventually did as commanded. By the time the crowd had cleared up, Daniel was gone.

Darren had gone to the scene of attack first, followed by his people. At this moment, Nyra was advising the stubborn Laziel to stay back.

"Eldest sister, I know that you are worried about me. Don't worry, I can protect myself." He glanced at the pitchfork in Zerra's hand, and his mouth twitched when he saw the girl move it protectively behind her.

"You even allow this munchkin to follow, but why not me?" He pointed to Zerra, who was glaring at him, then continued. "I am a man. I am physically stronger than her. Who knows if I might awaken a superpower? Some people awakened theirs during a perilous situation."

Nyra pursed her lips and sighed at the determination in Laziel's eyes. She glanced briefly at Cassias, who didn't seem to object to Laziel's request, and nodded.

Patting his shoulder, she advised, "We are dealing with a danger here. Don't expect anyone to save you. You must try to always rely on yourself."

After Nyra told him about what happened to Grandma, Laziel locked himself in his room for three days straight. There was infinite regret in his eyes, especially when he found out that as soon as he left for his dad's place, she had been expecting him to come back.

Grandma's worry was greater than her anger toward him. However, until her last sacrifice, he didn't even have the chance to say any last words to her…

If he had returned sooner, maybe he could have saved Grandma? Unfortunately, there was no medicine for regret in this life.

The operation might be dangerous, but he didn't want to regret it again and lose another family member. He wanted to protect Nyra.

"Of course." Laziel readily nodded.

The four of them left the place and headed toward the hospital. They entered through the main door.

Whenever they passed, there was a look of worry on everyone's faces, the medical staff and the patients alike. Some access had been closed to limit the zombies' movement and save more lives.

They asked medical staff some questions and finally could find the attack scene with some effort. There were sounds of guns and explosives the moment they approached the location of the zombie attack.

Some sights also made their hearts tremble. Zombies were everywhere, gnawing on some fresh meat, which came from people who weren't lucky enough to be able to escape. Among the unfortunate ones, they were mostly unconscious patients.

The moment zombies started to appear, people scrambled to save themselves.

Laziel nearly vomited when he saw the sight, but upon seeing others looked rather calm, he forced himself to hold it in. Zerra would make fun of him once she found out.

"It's strange." As they approached Darren's figure, who was commanding everyone, they heard him speak. "Those zombies looked like they just appeared out of thin air. Where did they come from?"

Everyone exchanged glances, equally confused. They just finished cleaning a room full of zombies and more were heading their way.

There were also mutated animals, and luckily those animals were only small ones, like rats or some insects. Their size only increased slightly and most can be killed with bullets and explosives.

"Go kill those zombies. Make sure you do that in teams and always have each other's back." Darren commanded again, and they dispersed.

Zerra frowned when she heard Darren's previous words, trying to rack her brain for recollection of such memories. She couldn't find any useful information, meaning that this was yet another plot variation.

Zombies appearing out of thin air? That was too odd.

"Let's go," Nyra spoke up, snapping everyone out of their daze. She gave Laziel a look. The man gave her an awkward glance before looking away.

Zerra noticed their interaction. She knew that Nyra's previous words were only empty. If Laziel was in danger, she would immediately come to his rescue.

Nyra just wanted to train this younger brother of hers so that he could survive the apocalypse.

Cassias nodded at Nyra's words and they all walked toward another building. Along the way, some zombies were also attacking them, but oddly, the number was less compared to some wide rooms.

When they arrived at a storage room, the inside had been torn down into an unrecognizable place. Stinky blood and pus coated every surface. The zombies instantly jumped to them.

Laziel was trembling when he did his first kill, thinking that the zombie was formerly also a living human like him. As soon as his eyes landed on Nyra, he steeled his heart to kill more of them.

Currently, they had been fighting for hours and were in the process of cleaning the other rooms, so it was highly likely they would meet more people.

"Daniel." Zerra muttered his name when she saw who was beside her. The man was holding a gun, and it was unknown where he had gotten that thing from.

"Oh, it's you." Daniel sneered when he saw her.

Although the zombies were slow and easy to kill, they somehow had gotten noticeably a bit faster in movement compared to a few weeks ago. Still, there were no fewer casualties in this operation.

Some had gotten bitten and were immediately brought away. They would be observed further whether miracles would happen on them–those people might hold the chance of awakening superpowers, though the possibility was less than 0,1%.

Those who were bitten by mutated animals have a bigger chance of surviving and awakening their superpowers.

Zerra saw him smirking with a malevolent glint in his eyes and was immediately alarmed. She watched as he shouted to other people. "Look, another one injured here. She might turn into a zombie."

Daniel was pointing to Zerra.
