Holidays always seemed to fly by when you were a child. Thinking back over the past few days, Gu You's eyes flickered slightly, lost in thought.
Strangely, even Gu Yue had been willing to join them. Although Gu You had grown up in a coastal city, he had never actually traveled the open sea — back then, he'd been too poor. But this time, spending long days on the ocean with Xie Xie and the others had been a blast. Especially during the seafood feast — they'd eaten so much that Xie Xie was moved to tears.
"Hey, do you guys remember what Xie Xie said? That maybe the academy really intends to help us all upgrade our soul rings to the thousand-year level?" Zhang Yangzi swallowed hard, his heart racing with excitement. After playing and relaxing for days, now that the end-of-term exam was near, he felt a surge of passion. Deep down, he had always craved strength and showing off in front of others — otherwise, he wouldn't have acted so arrogantly during their first advancement match against Tang Wulin's team.
Xie Xie laughed. "Very possible! And if that's true, that'd be amazing."
Gu You suddenly asked, "With the school paving the way for us so well, have you guys thought about what your secondary profession will be?"
"Secondary profession?" Zhang Yangzi thought hard. "I haven't decided yet."
"I'm not that smart and only have some strength, so I plan to follow Tang Wulin and study forging," Wang Jinxi said, scratching his head.
Xie Xie said, "Makes sense. I've basically already decided — my secondary profession will be mecha manufacturing! It's the one with the least technical requirements but needs highly practiced skills. I think it suits me. What about you guys?" He curiously looked at Gu You.
"Forging," Gu You said calmly.
"Forging?! I didn't expect you'd pick the same as Tang Wulin! No wonder you're both so strong. With your talent, you must be amazing at it, right? Can you help me make some metals in the future?" Xie Xie excitedly stepped closer, and even Wang Jinxi gave Gu You a few extra glances.
"Of course," Gu You replied smoothly, then turned to look at Gu Yue.
Gu Yue said, "I might study mecha repair."
"Huh? You're picking mecha repair? But you're a girl! I thought you'd go for mecha design." Xie Xie sounded surprised.
Gu Yue coolly answered, "Only people with no brains would think like that."
"You…!"
Their journey was full of playful banter — except for Gu Yue, who stayed silent at Gu You's side.
By the time they returned to Eastsea Academy, it was already near dusk. Gu You headed straight back to his dorm to meditate. By now, his soul power had reached the peak of rank 32 — just one step away from breaking through to rank 33. But the limits of an ultimate martial soul were harsh, and on top of that, he'd noticed his mind world constantly drawing on his soul power during cultivation, making progress even slower.
Still, it was an astonishing pace. A ten-year-old, rank-33 soul master — almost unheard of.
Suddenly, a burst of explosive energy rippled through Gu You's dorm.
That was it — he'd officially reached rank 33!
…
At dawn, the entire city of Eastsea was blanketed in a thick fog, making it hard to see anything clearly.
Normally, the Eastsea branch of the Spirit Pagoda wasn't too busy, but today it was bustling with activity. As one of the Spirit Pagoda's Eighteen Pillars, this site was one of the official entrances to the riot-period Spirit Ascension Platform.
A single entry card for the riot period could sell for tens of thousands of gold coins — equivalent to a billion federal credits — and even then, demand far exceeded supply.
That showed just how much Eastsea Academy had spent, pulling strings and resources, to secure six riot-period entry cards. Every year, these cards were hotly contested. Although very few people actually succeeded in advancing their spirits inside, the chance was enough to make people flock here.
Early in the morning, Wu Zhangkong brought his Zero Class students to the Eastsea Spirit Pagoda.
The earlier they entered, the fewer opponents they were likely to run into.
"Remember," Wu Zhangkong instructed, his voice calm, "during the riot period, the Spirit Ascension Platform holds the highest number of simultaneous participants. Once inside, apart from each other, everyone else is your enemy. Your only goal is to survive.
"Anyone who fails the end-of-term exam… will be punished."
His gaze turned to Gu You.
"Your strength is special — you don't belong to their team. Once you're inside, you can choose whether or not to act. It's entirely up to you."
Gu You's strength was terrifying. With just his hundred-thousand-year soul ring alone, the basic riot-period Spirit Ascension Platform posed no real threat to him.
Hearing this, Xie Xie couldn't help but ask curiously, "Teacher Wu, what's the punishment?"
Wu Zhangkong gave him a flat look. "Canceling your vacation."
Each semester ended with a month-long break.
When Xie Xie heard "canceling vacation," his eyes went wide — he'd been looking forward to the holiday for so long!
The others exchanged glances.
Even Tang Wulin stayed calm, but Gu Yue frowned slightly, and Gu You grew visibly annoyed.
'Canceling vacation? Fine! Then this time, I'll go all out!!'
"Let's go."
The six entry cards were handed over.
Under the guidance of the staff, they were led into a familiar room — a sign of Eastsea Academy's influence.
As the only intermediate soul master academy in the city, Eastsea had considerable sway, plus a good relationship with the Spirit Pagoda. That's why they were able to secure six riot-period entry slots.
A special admission room had been arranged just for them, and the academy was even allowed to have a teacher monitor their entry — something not typically permitted.
"The riot-period Spirit Ascension Platform is extremely dangerous. But you've all entered the platform many times already and are familiar with it, so I won't say too much more.
"If you feel something's wrong — retreat immediately," the staff reminded them.
The more times you entered the platform, the less likely you were to face the kind of danger Wang Jinxi had encountered the first time.
The six students each lay down in their metal capsules.
Under the staff's operation, the lids closed.
The light faded away.
The scanning instruments powered on.
Entry preparation began.
The staff slotted the five entry cards into their designated slots, then pressed a red button — this was the riot-period safety lock.
Only with these cards could they enter, and their entry positions would be controlled.
There was a brief moment of disorientation.
When they came to, they were already standing inside a vast forest.
The biggest difference this time was — the six of them had entered the Spirit Ascension Platform together.
Fresh air. Green vegetation. Everything looked familiar, seemingly no different from usual.
Tang Wulin's voice rang out calmly.
"Formation!"
He stepped forward, taking the front.
Wang Jinxi held the rear, his back to Tang Wulin.
Zhang Yangzi and Xie Xie took left and right.
The four faced outward, while Gu Yue stood at the center — just as they'd practiced last night.
Tang Wulin had even prepared steel vests for them, doubling their defense.
As for Gu You, he was already standing atop a tree, gazing into the distance.
A soft green glow flashed, covering all five — Gu Yue's wind element control.
Though it wasn't very strong, it lightened their weight, making each of them more agile.
Tang Wulin raised his right hand. Two Blue Silver Grass vines emerged. His yellow soul ring lit up at his feet.
The vines, like living snakes, extended forward, then swept to the sides, parting the underbrush and revealing a path.
