Two days later

I stared at my status screen, the familiar blue interface floating in front of me as I lay on my cot. The number of stat points I possessed had grown significantly, but somehow they felt more useless than ever.

Name: Lucien Reynolds

Job: None

Level:Fatigue: 2

HP: 150 MP: 0

Strength: 13

Health: 15

Agility: 12

Perception: 8

Mana: 0

Stat Points: 76

Gold: 0

[Inventory] [Skills] [Shop]

Seventy-six stat points sitting unused, and yet I felt more stressed than ever.

The irony was that it was due to something I was hoping to get, but when I had it, it was stressing me out.

All because of that damn timer.

The past two days had changed everything.

The cursed loot box rewards had shifted completely from bonus stat points to actual physical items—a pair of wicked-looking daggers, and after today's quest, I got an E-rank dungeon key.

Both were sitting in my inventory, taunting me.

But there was a catch. There was always a fucking catch.

Dungeon Key expires in: 22 hours, 18 minutes.

Twenty-four hours to use it, or it would disappear forever.

I couldn't afford to lose this key—it was probably my only chance to gain real power quickly, the kind of boost that could get me and Anna out of this hellhole.

Missing this opportunity might mean being stuck here for God knows how long.

But using the key created an even bigger problem.

If I disappeared into a dungeon and came back stronger, there was no way I could just pretend nothing happened.

They'd drag me off for intensive experiments and interrogation, probably dissect me to figure out what had changed.

So it's all or nothing. Use the key, clear the dungeon, come back stronger, and break both of us out tonight.

The real kicker? The dungeon key could only be used in one specific location—the corridor directly outside my cell.

Of course, it had to be there.

The corridor was constantly patrolled by two guards, fully armed.

But the cells themselves were just standard concrete and steel—built for depowered subjects who shouldn't pose any real threat.

Time to find out how wrong they were about that.

I closed the status screen and tried to calm my racing heart.

The plan was insane—break out of my cell, deal with two armed guards, reach the activation point, and somehow use this as the start of a complete escape plan.

No pressure at all.

I spent the next few minutes going over what I knew.

The cell door was electronic but not reinforced for superhuman strength. Two guards patrolled the corridor in shifts. My enhanced physique should be enough to handle the cell and the guards, but timing would be everything.

Need to get them to open the cell first. Can't break out if they're already suspicious. They will just open fire directly.

An hour passed as I waited for the right moment. The corridor outside was quiet except for the occasional footsteps of the patrol.

Finally, I heard two sets of boots approaching—perfect timing.

Time to put my acting skills to the test.

I started groaning loudly, clutching my stomach and rolling around on the cot. "Oh God... something's wrong... help!" I called out, making sure my voice carried the right amount of pain and panic.

The footsteps stopped outside my cell.

"What's wrong with you, mutant?" one of them called—Martinez, by the sound of it.

"I think... I think something's wrong with the food," I gasped, doubling over dramatically. "Feels like I'm dying... please, I need help!"

I could hear them conferring in low voices.

These guys weren't medical personnel, but they couldn't just let a test subject die from food poisoning without at least checking.

I saw Anna shouting something at me, but I couldn't respond to her.

"Stand back from the door," Peterson's voice commanded. "Keep your hands visible."

Here we go.

The cell door slid open with its electronic whine, and both guards stepped in cautiously.

Peterson had his hand on his sidearm while Martinez carried a medical scanner—standard procedure for health emergencies.

The moment they were both inside the cell, I dropped the act.

Here goes nothing.

My recovered strength gave me the element of surprise as I sprang up from the cot and slammed my shoulder into Peterson's chest, sending him flying backward into the corridor wall with enough force to knock the wind out of him.

Damn, so that's the difference with just a few stats, it felt like throwing a paper.

Martinez was reaching for his weapon when I grabbed him by the uniform and threw him against the cell wall.

The impact was hard enough to daze him, but not enough to cause serious injury.

Sorry guys, nothing personal.

I bolted out of the cell and started sprinting down the corridor, my heart hammering with adrenaline.

Oh shit, I'm actually doing this! Breaking out of this damn hell hole! This is either brilliant or the stupidest thing I've ever done!

Behind me, Peterson was already shouting into his radio. "CONTAINMENT BREACH! Subject 247 has escaped his cell!"

Subject 247? That's what they call me? Lame choice for one of the only two mutants they had.

BANG!

The first gunshot echoed through the corridor. I immediately started zigzagging like in action movies.

Movies! I'm basing my escape on action movies! What is wrong with me?!

BANG! BANG!

More shots, bullets whining past me as I ran toward the end of the corridor.

Almost there, almost there, just keep running and try not to die!

BANG!

Fire exploded through my left leg as a bullet grazed me, sending me stumbling forward with a scream. I hit the ground hard but kept crawling toward the activation point.

"LUCIEN!" Anna's voice echoed from her cell, terror evident in every syllable.

I'm sorry, Anna. I'll come back for you, I promise.

Peterson was running toward me, gun drawn. I could see him approaching fast.

Now or never.

I mentally accessed my inventory and felt the dungeon key materialize in my hand—a crystalline object that pulsed with inner light.

Without hesitation, I pressed it against the wall at the end of the corridor.

The key sank into the concrete like water, disappearing with a soft hum.

For a terrifying moment, nothing happened.

Then reality tore open.

A swirling blue portal erupted into existence, its edges crackling with energy. Beyond it was swirling darkness.

Thank God that actually worked.

Using my good leg and pure adrenaline, I dragged myself forward and tumbled through the portal just as Peterson reached me. His confused shouts faded as reality twisted around me.

The last thing I heard was Anna calling my name, her voice filled with desperation.

I'll come back, I thought as consciousness slipped away. I promise I'll come back to you.
