Chapter 3

I regained consciousness in the pack’s healing den.

"Luna, would you like some water?" a familiar voice inquired.

"Brenna?" It was Brenna, a pack healer and my closest friend. She’d found me collapsed at the territory’s edge and brought me to the den.

"How did you end up in the Gloomfang Wilds?" Brenna asked, her brow furrowed with confusion.

"It's a long, dark story," I replied wearily.

Suddenly, Caiden's commanding voice echoed from the hallway.

"Where is she?"

Brenna promptly stepped out. "Alpha, your mate is in here."

The room's door was ajar. I glimpsed Caiden, his gaze as cold and hard as winter stone.

A Healer said, "Alpha, Doris Rageclaw is in the Luna's Recovery Suite."

"How is she?" Caiden inquired, his voice laced with concern.

The Healer answered, "She's unharmed, just suffering from exposure."

"Thank the Moon Goddess." Caiden turned and headed straight for the Luna’s Recovery Suite.

Brenna was taken aback. "Why didn't your mate come to see you?"

I gave a sad, bitter smile, offering no explanation.

The following day around noon, I spotted Caiden walking down the corridor with a hand-carved wooden meal carrier. He passed my room without so much as a glance, as if I were a ghost.

I had carved that very meal carrier for him.

I used to frequently visit the sentinel unit barracks, bringing food for my Alpha.

Now, he was carrying the gift I made for him, delivering a meal to his beloved.

The irony was a blade in my heart.

As I prepared for bed around ten that night, Doris barged into my room.

"What do you want?" I asked, my voice low.

Doris sneered, "I'm surprised you're so resilient. A fall from the Broken Fang Cliff didn't kill you."

I retorted, "Are you going to confess, or should I present my evidence to the Elders?"

Doris chuckled, "Do you have any proof? Who would believe a half-blood over a Rageclaw?"

"The truth always reveals itself," I stated.

Doris boasted, "The truth? The only truth that matters is that you lured me into the Gloomfang Wilds to kill me. I barely escaped and was heroically rescued.

"By the way, are you suffering? Caiden chose to save me instead of his own mate."

After my past life, I was completely disenchanted with Caiden. If not for the cursed Wraithfog, I never would have sought his help.

"Are you finished? Leave," I said coldly.

Just then, familiar, measured footsteps approached from the corridor. It was Caiden.

Abruptly, Doris pulled a small silver dagger from her sleeve and dragged it across her own arm.

She then collapsed to the floor, looking at me tearfully. "Caiden and I are just friends, Lidia. I know you don't believe me. But why did you have to attack me?"

My door swung open.

Caiden dropped the meal carrier and rushed to Doris's side. "Lidia, you're cruel and vicious. Doris did nothing wrong. Why did you harm her? Can't you see she's still traumatized?"

"Wasn't I traumatized? Am I not the one with a broken leg?" I countered.

Caiden replied, "You deserved it. If you hadn't lured Doris into that forbidden forest, none of this would have happened."

"Do you believe every lie she speaks?" I challenged.

Caiden responded firmly, "Yes. Doris is pure of heart."

I shouted, "Fine! I won't argue with you two vipers. Get out. I don't want to see either of you."

"My arm hurts so much," Doris whimpered, clutching the bleeding wound.

Caiden, his face a mask of fury, unleashed the full force of his Alpha dominance upon me.

The invisible power slammed me against the wall. I slid to the floor as a sharp, horrifying pain shot through my abdomen. Looking down, I saw blood staining my clothes.
