Whispers of the Ironborn

Scout #4 returned bleeding from chest-high bramble cuts. She held in her trembling hand a map-quartz shard etched with quadrant glyphs and tribal runes. That night, under torchlight in the Blind Hall vault, Riku studied it.

It showed multiple overlapping territory circles — one included their own Zone B, another unclaimed forest, and a third centered on a walled settlement beyond Sector C. The runes named it "Ironborn Holdfast." Walls estimated at six meters tall, reinforced with stone and bark-steel, flanked by watch towers. The Ironborn, another Sovereign tribe with a suit of forged iron affinity, were expanding.

They were building toward them.

In the Council Hollow, Riku outlined an offensive plan:

Objective A: Launch preemptive strike to destroy Ironborn forward outposts in Sector C's adjacent forest.

Objective B: Disable their southern walls via night-flame sabotage.

Objective C: Dawn assault on the holdfast itself — minimize casualties, seize territory.

Only Thalya, Juran, Nilo, and two Emberfront commanders were present. They discussed timing andinting forward.

Riku mapped intel gathered: Ironborn were ruthlessly efficient. They mined slagbone, melted metal alloys, and their warriors wore chainmail infused with barksteel. Their herald — a hard-faced woman named Lord Varyen Ironsoul — ruled with strict numbers. Captive slaves tunneling underground confirmed their walls were built in weeks. They had skirmished with neighboring Sovereigns before, but never met a root-bound resistance like the Lorians.

This mission would test both soil and sword.

Two nights later, Riku inspected the Ridgeguard spearmen's new triangular shields—freshly forged barksteel plates.

He counted 44 shields on the rack; had expected 22.

Assault on the Outposts

Pre-dawn of Day 5, Sector C's flank was dark. Emberfront archers and Rootbound flankers moved under cover.

Outposts lay in clusters of watchtowers half-hidden in roots. Flash traps and flame-trigger tripping had been set weeks ago.

Riku led 20 fire-spear squads, 44 spearmen, and a root-guided ambush team. Ashmaw stalked at the rear.

They struck:

Within two hours, three outposts were destroyed. Casualties: 14 Lorians lightly wounded, 37 Ironborn slain, 21 captured.
