I watched Kaelen approach Isolde from across the crowded ballroom, my stomach knotting with tension. He'd promised he would apologize, but the rigid set of his shoulders told me this wasn't easy for him.
The local gathering was in full swing, music pulsing through the air as couples twirled across the dance floor. I couldn't hear their conversation over the noise, but I saw Isolde's surprised expression shift to cautious relief. Whatever Kaelen said must have been adequate because she nodded once, her posture relaxing slightly.
Mission accomplished. I turned away, not wanting to witness more of their interaction than necessary. The champagne in my glass bubbled pleasantly as I took another sip, letting the alcohol warm my insides.
