Chapter 45

Chapter 45 - A Day of Torment and Shattered Illusions

I woke up with a heaviness in my chest that made it hard to breathe. The memories of last night—Isolde on her knees before Kaelen, his eyes locked on mine—haunted me like a recurring nightmare. I rolled over, burying my face in my pillow to muffle a frustrated scream.

How could I have been so stupid? To think he actually cared about me, that those moments of tenderness meant something. They were just another manipulation in his twisted game.

My phone buzzed with a text from Elara asking if I was coming in today. I stared at the message, contemplating calling in sick. But hiding wouldn't solve anything. If anything, it would just give Kaelen the satisfaction of knowing how deeply he'd hurt me.

I dragged myself out of bed, grateful that Kaelen had already left. The house felt emptier without him, but the relief outweighed the loneliness. At least I could breathe without his suffocating presence.
