Chapter 46 - Words That Shatter
I was still trembling when I reached the bank of elevators, humiliation burning through every inch of my body. Rowena's voice echoed in my head, her insults on repeat while the memory of Kaelen walking past me without a glance twisted like a knife in my chest.
The elevator arrived with a cheerful ding that felt like mockery. I stepped inside, grateful to find it empty, and pressed the button for my floor. As the doors started to close, a hand shot between them.
Liam.
"Seraphina! I heard what happened." His eyes were wide with concern. "Are you okay?"
I couldn't speak. My throat felt swollen with unshed tears. I just shook my head.
The elevator started its descent, and I stared fixedly at the numbers, willing myself not to break down. Not here. Not now.
"Rowena had no right to speak to you like that," Liam said, his voice tight with anger. "Everyone knows you didn't work on the Wilson account."
I swallowed hard. "It doesn't matter."
