Chapter 39

Chapter 39: Family Dinner and an Unwanted Guest

I stayed in bed for two days after Gareth's party. Every time I moved, the scratches on my back sent sharp pains through my body. My wolf was still whimpering, making everything worse.

Mom knocked on my bedroom door for the third time that morning. "Aria, honey? Are you sure you don't want some soup?"

"I'm not hungry," I called back weakly.

She cracked the door open anyway, concern etched across her face. "You haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon."

I rolled over, wincing. "My stomach hurts."

Mom sat on the edge of my bed, her cool hand brushing hair from my forehead. "No fever at least. Is it... is it the marks on your back?"

I nodded, not wanting to explain how rejection physically affected a wolf. How could I tell her that my body was literally breaking down because my mate didn't want me?

"I think I'll skip classes again today," I mumbled.

"That's probably best," she agreed, her eyes sad. "Rest will help you heal."
