Chapter 44

Chapter 44: Balcony Barbs and a Painful Smile

Aria's POV

The realization hit me like a physical blow. Lucian Monroe—the man who had publicly rejected and humiliated me—was holding me against his chest while I sobbed about my father.

I jerked away from him, my cheeks burning with embarrassment. How could I have mistaken him for Caleb? How could I have shared those private thoughts with him of all people?

"Don't touch me," I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself protectively.

Lucian didn't reach for me again. Instead, he leaned against the balcony railing, his dark eyes studying me with an intensity that made my skin tingle. The afternoon sun highlighted the sharp angles of his face, making him even more devastatingly handsome.

I hated that I noticed.

"I wasn't trying to upset you," he said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "I just saw you were crying."

"And what? You suddenly care?" I wiped away the last of my tears, angry at myself for showing weakness in front of him.
