"How about I ask around tomorrow, see if that family still has an unmarried daughter?" Mary thought for a moment. She realized that if she let Clark continue looking freely, who knew how long it would take for her to finally hold a grandchild.
In America, marriages are relatively free. Some people marry young, some marry late, and no one really cares. Some even hit their 40s without children. Take Tony Stark for example—he's nearly 40 now and still has no kids.
What's more, with this kidnapping incident, it's not even clear if he'll make it back. If he doesn't, Stark Industries could end up in someone else's hands. Just thinking about it made Mary uneasy.
"Forget it, I do want Clark to find someone, but I should at least give him more chances to meet girls. Maybe he'll fall in love with one of them," Mary thought to herself, making a silent decision.
"Mom, don't mess around. I'm not really into blind dates," Clark quickly protested upon hearing her matchmaking plan.
With an Asian soul, Clark felt that his aesthetic taste was a bit different from that of pure-blooded white Americans. Many women they considered beautiful looked just average to him.
Just like many Chinese people found the Chinese models chosen by international brands unacceptable—some even felt it was an insult.
So Clark wasn't thrilled about his mother setting him up.
"It's fine, I'll just find a few options. You don't have to commit. Just meet them, maybe one of them will catch your eye. Getting to know a few girls isn't a bad thing," Mary said cheerfully.
"I think your mother's right. Leave this to her," Old Kent chimed in, offering timely support.
"Fine, fine, do whatever you want," Clark surrendered. To be honest, he did want a partner—but he wasn't an ordinary person. If he chose someone randomly, it could easily expose his identity.
"But it probably doesn't matter anymore," Clark thought, glancing down at his fist. He realized he was no longer the child he used to be. Now, he basically had all of Superman's powers.
His current stats were roughly on par with Superman from Man of Steel during his battle with Zod. With this body, he was nearly invincible on Earth, aside from a very few exceptions.
One month later, Clark received a call from his mother.
"Hey, Mom."
"Hey, Clark. Are you busy tonight?"
"I'm fine. What's up?"
"Well, I made dinner plans with my college friend, your Aunt Bella, and her family tonight.
Her daughter just started her sophomore year in college and she's really pretty…
Close up early today and come help tidy up, okay?"
Clark knew that if he refused, his mom might just show up at his store anyway.
That evening, after soaking up some sunlight, Clark tidied the flower shop and closed up.
"Off to the blind date."
Even though he claimed to dislike matchmaking, deep down, Clark was a little excited.
He disliked blind dates because they always felt awkward—the intention behind the meeting was too strong.
But he was excited because he didn't know what the girl would be like. Given how his mom hyped it up, he subconsciously assumed she'd be beautiful.
And meeting a pretty girl in the evening? That was always something to look forward to.
About 20 minutes later, Clark pulled up to the hotel in his second-hand Audi, the one his mom had booked.
"Hey, Clark's here! Come, sit down. Let me introduce you. This is my son, Clark."
"Clark, this is your mother's college friend, you can call her Aunt Bella. And this is her daughter, Daisy."
Mary stood up excitedly when Clark arrived and made the introductions.
Following her gestures, Clark looked over at the girl. At first glance, she seemed fairly attractive, but on closer inspection, Clark felt she didn't match his aesthetic—her jawline was a little too square.
Daisy noticed Clark looking at her and gave him a small nod and smile. Clark returned the gesture.
"Hi, I'm Clark Kent," he said politely, even though his name had already been mentioned. He wanted to show respect.
"Nice to meet you, Clark. I'm Bella Miller. Your mother always talks about you, but I think she's been way too modest," Bella said with a smile.
Mary blushed at the compliment about her son.
Bella continued, introducing her daughter to Clark.
"This is my daughter, Daisy Miller. She's a sophomore at Berkeley. You went to Berkeley too, right?"
Clark nodded. "Yeah, I did. I guess that makes her my junior. I graduated over a year ago though, so I can't really look after juniors anymore."
"No worries. I also heard from your mom that you opened a flower shop, right?"
"Yeah, it's in Manhattan. Business is going pretty well."
Even though Daisy wasn't really Clark's type, he couldn't just leave after showing up. So he sat quietly and chatted politely with the family.
The dinner passed quickly in a pleasant atmosphere.
After dinner, Clark noticed that Bella and her daughter hadn't driven there.
"Aunt Bella, I noticed you and Daisy didn't drive. Let me take you home."
Bella shook her head. "No need, Daisy's father is on his way. You go ahead."
After saying goodbye, Clark and Mary drove home together.
"So, Clark, what do you think of Daisy? I think she's really great—pretty and has a nice personality. What do you think? Want to give it a try?"
As soon as they got in the car, Mary began probing again.
"She's alright. But… not really my type," Clark replied while focusing on the road.
"If you're not into her, just say so. I'll be more careful next time."
Mary wasn't upset. After all, matchmaking rarely worked on the first try. She was prepared for the long haul.
"There's always time later," Clark wanted to complain, but when he saw his helpless expression in the rearview mirror, he gave in.
"I like rounder faces. Not a fan of square jaws."
"Got it. I'll look for someone with a rounder face next time."
Then Mary pulled out a notebook and started flipping through it, muttering:
"Not this one—her daughter's already married. Not this one—too young. This one doesn't even have a daughter. Hmm, this one might work—just graduated college, seems decent…"
Clark's forehead twitched. He hadn't expected his mom to keep a whole notebook just to track her friends' daughters.
Just then, with his keen eyesight, Clark spotted something robot-like flying straight toward them.
