The Chairman, fearing Sarah was becoming a terrible influence on Logan, hastily arranged our engagement.
I had just completed my doctorate and signed a contract as the Chief Therapist at the International Medical Institute, but this sudden turn of events forced me to give it all up.
For the next twenty years, I poured my life's work and every ounce of my being into Moonstone's pharmaceutical R&D, transforming the company into a pharmaceutical giant.
But in the end, my reward was to fall gravely ill from overwork, only to be poisoned with wolfsbane and left without a proper burial.
For Logan, the engagement tore him away from his beloved Sarah. And for me, wasn't it a self-sacrifice, made to repay a debt of gratitude?
At that thought, my resolve hardened.
I looked up at Logan, his gaze still filled with hatred for me, and calmly pushed open the door.
"Since your heart isn't in this, our engagement is off. You can go."
Logan's eyes widened, unable to believe those words had come from me.
"You've schemed for so many years. Wasn't it all just to become the young lady of Moonstone?"
"You were so close to succeeding. How could you suddenly be so generous!"
Seeing the wariness and doubt in his eyes, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me.
In the past, out of gratitude to the Chairman's family, I had always been completely obedient to Logan, so accommodating it was almost servile.
Thanks to Sarah's deliberate slander, Logan and the entire business world saw me as a scheming social climber who used her status as an adopted daughter to curry favor with the Chairman and his wife, hoping to marry their heir and change her stars.
As long as Logan’s heart still favored Sarah, any explanation I offered would seem pale and feeble.
I shook my head and gave a bitter smile.
"No matter how despicable I am in your eyes, I have always considered you family. Even if we can't be husband and wife, I don't want us to become enemies."
Logan froze for a moment, looking at me with hesitation.
After so many years, it was the first time I had seen a trace of his childhood innocence on his face.
"Fine, I'll trust you this once!"
Logan got up and changed into a set of casual clothes.
Under my cover, he slipped past the layers of security at Moonstone and successfully disappeared into the night.
By the time the Chairman found out, Logan had already met up with Sarah and had even posted a video on social media of the two of them kissing passionately on a hotel bed.
The Chairman was so furious he smashed his phone on the spot and could only announce that the engagement was postponed.
It wasn't until noon the next day that Logan and Sarah returned, hand in hand.
The collar of his shirt, deliberately pulled low, was covered in suggestive red marks, making it easy to imagine just how wild their night had been.
"Dad, Sarah and I are madly in love, and now what's done is done. She might even be carrying your grandchild right now, so you might as well just let us be together!"
Ignoring my presence, Logan and Sarah started hugging and kissing, putting on an extravagant display of affection.
"You're utterly bewitched, insisting on jumping into this pit of fire!"
The Chairman's face turned livid, but his hands were tied. He could only warn Sarah, "From now on, you'd better behave yourself. No more of your past recklessness. Don't tarnish Moonstone's reputation!"
When Logan heard this, he realized the Chairman was consenting and was immediately ecstatic.
Sarah, however, was as cavalier as ever. She shot me a glance.
"Since Logan and I are getting married, there's no reason for an outsider like you to stay at Moonstone, is there?"
The Chairman's expression changed, and even Logan looked surprised, tugging at the corner of Sarah's sleeve.
"Sarah, that's not necessary." Logan said.
"What do you mean, not necessary? Every time I see her face, all I can think about is how she shamelessly tried to social climb her way up to you. That fact alone makes me sick to my stomach!"
Sarah shook off Logan's hand, pointing at me provocatively, "Either you get on your knees right now and beg like a failed therapist, swear you'll be the company's gofer from now on, and I might just let you stay to clean the toilets!"
