The moment I heard those words, my eyes locked onto Sarah, pinning her in place.
The only reason I had backed down was because I didn't want to repeat the mistakes of my past!
My gaze seemed to sting Sarah, but she just gritted her teeth and continued her provocation.
"What? You're just an outsider. Are you really going to attack his future daughter-in-law right in front of the Chairman of Moonstone?"
Just then, the Chairman let out a cold, sharp snort.
"Humph! If you hadn't said anything, I would have thought you were the Chairman! You seemed quite comfortable giving orders just now, didn't you?"
I knew then that the Chairman was, and always had been, on my side.
After being shot down by both me and the Chairman, even someone as shameless as Sarah couldn't keep her composure.
"Oh, baby, you have to say something for me!"
Sarah immediately grabbed Logan's arm, whining coquettishly.
Logan looked troubled, but in the end, he still turned to me. "Evelyn, the choice is yours."
"Either you do as Sarah says, or..."
"Save your breath. I never intended to stay anyway!"
My words made the Chairman shoot to his feet.
"How can this be?"
He grabbed my shoulders.
"You are Moonstone's Chief Therapist! If you leave, what about the unfinished treatments? That was your blood, sweat, and tears!"
The Chairman smiled bitterly.
I knew he wasn't worried about the drug's development failing and impacting the company's bottom line.
He was just trying to find an excuse to make me stay.
"Chairman, I've already organized all the clinical data for the medications. The Moonstone R&D team will help you complete the remaining work."
I smiled, feeling none of the anger you'd expect from being cast out. In fact, I felt increasingly at ease.
"There won't be any problems as long as you have professionals continue the research with this data."
"It's just a shame I won't be able to help you anymore. I hope you find a true heir soon."
I made a point of reminding the Chairman.
The Moonstone R&D team is very competent, so it won't be a problem for them to finish my research. The only condition is that you can't let scum like Sarah get involved.
"Evelyn, what is that supposed to mean? What do you mean by 'a true heir'? Are you suggesting Logan and I aren't fit to be the heirs?"
Sarah was furious.
But in the face of her fury, I didn't even spare her a glance.
"Chairman, goodbye!"
With that said, I turned to leave.
"Stop!"But Sarah spread her arms, blocking my way.
"Since you've decided to leave, then make it a clean break!"
"Leave the same way you came to Moonstone!"
"The clothes on your back, the jewelry on your hands, the car you drive—wasn't every single thing bought with Moonstone's money? How dare you take any of it with you?"
Sarah lifted her chin, glaring at me.
It was obvious she had reached the point of picking a fight for no reason.
"If you can't find any real fault, you can just shut up."
I shot her a cold glance.
"Let's not even talk about the distant past. Just in the last two years, I've developed three commercial drugs for Moonstone. To date, each one has an average market value of over four billion dollars."
"Four billion dollars, and you think that can't buy these things?"
I stared daggers at Sarah, the corner of her mouth twitching.
She had failed again.
I needed her to know that I was leaving of my own free will, not because I was being driven out by a good-for-nothing like her!
But what I hadn't expected was for Logan to suddenly step in front of me, biting his lip.
"Evelyn, everything you just mentioned was merely you repaying Moonstone for raising you all these years."
