"Honey, I know you've been wronged. I'll take care of this right away."
"I've already had someone suppress the online rumors. How about we make it official after we get our marriage license in a little while?"
"Of course, I won't let you be wronged. Just be good, and after we're married, we'll go to the Maldives like you've always wanted."
I came to while Ben was on the phone.
His tone was completely different from how he speaks to me.
Perhaps it was because the pregnant woman was young and, in Ben's eyes, very pure.
That's why Ben was so gentle with her.
The last time I heard him speak like that was when we first started dating.
Just as I was bitterly reminiscing about the past, Ben hung up the phone.
"Alright, since you're awake, stop playing dead."
He held the divorce papers casually, now handing them to me again.
It was as if he was afraid I'd use unconsciousness to escape signing them.
I took the pen and quickly signed my name.
He seemed surprised by how readily I complied, raising an eyebrow.
"You're being quite cooperative."
He looked pleased, even deigning to say a few more words.
"The house is yours."
"I'll also give you twenty million dollars. That should be more than enough for you to live comfortably."
Just as he was about to leave, I called out to him.
"Ben."
My body was still very weak.
My voice was barely a whisper. He heard my voice and his steps faltered. "What is it?"
Impatience was written all over his face.
"Do you remember when we went to the hospital for fertility tests?"
"What are you trying to say now?"
A sudden laugh escaped me.
Deep down, I felt none of the pain of his betrayal.
Only the exhilarating joy of revealing a momentous secret.
"I was the one who went to get the results."
"I lied to you."
"The truth is, you're infertile. That child could never be yours."
