Guilt and a Hard Fall

## Hazel's POV

The phone rang just as I was reviewing fabric samples for our upcoming winter collection. Vera's name flashed across the screen.

"Hey, what's up?" I answered, tucking the phone between my ear and shoulder as I compared two nearly identical shades of midnight blue.

"Hazel, have you heard what people are saying?" Vera's voice had that tone—the one that meant gossip was spreading.

I set down the fabric swatches. "What now? More Everett family drama?"

"No, it's about you." She paused dramatically. "There's a rumor going around that you used black magic on the Everetts. That's why Gloria had her... episode. And why Alistair's condition is getting worse again."

I nearly choked. "Black magic? Are you serious?"

"Dead serious. Gloria's friends are telling everyone you somehow cursed their family. That you're getting revenge through some kind of witchcraft."

I laughed, but it came out hollow. "That's ridiculous. I don't even believe in that stuff."
