(RBT) Chapter 44: These Chive Pockets Are Damn Good

No one could compare to Lucifer's quality of sleep, not even a Blood Devil Lord.

"Ngh... ahhh~!"

Lucifer twitched on the bed. Anyone who didn't know better would think he was tripping on something.

By now, the sun was already high in the sky, and Lucifer was finally released from the seal of his bed. Pushing open his dorm room door, the scent of food gradually wafted over from the living room.

Texas was sitting on the sofa digesting, having apparently been awake for some time. And the source of this rich, aromatic scent was, without a doubt, a takeout meal that Texas had bought from outside.

Expecting Texas to cook herself? Is she supposed to be some kind of housewife?

"You're awake. I bought you breakfast, if you can still call a meal at this hour 'breakfast'."

Lucifer glanced at the clock hanging in the dorm. The hands were pointing squarely at: 11:45 AM.

"It's not 12 yet, so it's collectively known as 'morning'."

"Whatever makes you happy."

Although Lucifer didn't need to eat to maintain his nutrition like a normal person, he put on his actor's mask so Texas wouldn't notice anything strange. He walked to the dining table with a look of delight.

Chive pockets and congee.

Yes! That's it! This is the stuff!

A Blood Devil is a Blood Devil, but Lucifer still got cravings from time to time.

"When did you wake up?"

"Around 8. I saw you were still sleeping, so I didn't wake you."

If Texas remembered correctly, Lucifer hadn't gone to bed particularly late last night, yet he still slept all the way until noon the next day. This excellent quality of sleep even made Texas a little envious.

She couldn't say she was surprised; it perfectly matched her stereotype of a "young person's self-disciplined schedule."

Watching Lucifer take a bite of a chive pocket followed by a spoonful of congee, Texas's ears twitched as if she'd thought of something amusing.

"Just in case you didn't know, work at Penguin Logistics starts at ten in the morning."

Hearing this, Lucifer's chewing paused for a moment, but he immediately went back to enthusiastically shoveling it down. Seeing his completely unconcerned, chow-down-focused expression, Texas felt a little puzzled.

"Aren't you afraid the boss will dock your pay?"

"Even if the apocalypse came to Terra, it would have to wait until I wake up naturally."

"...Whatever makes you happy."

Texas let out a helpless sigh. It wasn't just his disciplined schedule; his mental state also perfectly fit her stereotype of him.

Lucifer had his own retort, though. He had spent two hundred years in Kazdel maintaining almost the exact same routine every day. His biological clock was etched into his very instincts. Anyone who could change that overnight would have to be a god.

Finishing his breakfast just before 12 PM, Lucifer clocked in at the office and then went out on deliveries with Texas.

Today's work was much more relaxed than yesterday's. There were no intentionally difficult customers, nor were there any local posers like Brother Tiger. It was another day of thriving business for Penguin Logistics.

The only thing that remained constant was Texas's jeep, which was still a spectacular sight on the streets of Lungmen.

"Have you ever considered getting a five-star wanted level from the L.G.D., Texas?" Lucifer asked from the passenger seat.

With the jeep's current momentum, if she accidentally hit someone, probably only a person with his kind of physique could walk away unharmed. For a normal person like Brother Tiger, they probably wouldn't even see their life flashing before their eyes; they'd be sent to meet their maker on the spot.

"I know what I'm doing. It's not like I'm in a firefight with gangsters. At most, the Lungmen Guard Department will just give me a few speeding tickets."

"So?"

A small smirk played on Texas's lips.

"I don't have a Lungmen driver's license anyway."

"You're unbeatable, my friend."

Only then did Lucifer realize that the Lupo girl beside him was a veteran Grand Theft Auto player. He couldn't help but feel from the bottom of his heart that he had truly come to the right place with Penguin Logistics.

"How 'bout a five-star review?"

"You got it, bro."

After delivering the last package, Lucifer had just come out of the building when he saw Texas leaning against the car, smoking. Because Lucifer didn't like secondhand smoke, Texas now rarely smoked in the car or the dorm.

"Texas, you're smoking again? Why don't you take a little break?"

"Sorry."

Seeing Lucifer walk over, Texas immediately extinguished the cigarette in her hand and offered a plain, simple apology, giving Lucifer absolutely no chance to lecture her.

"Ever thought about quitting?"

"Not for the time being."

In truth, Texas had indeed entertained the idea of quitting. But every time the thought popped into her head, her body would subconsciously reach for another one. Just as Lucifer couldn't change his biological clock overnight, Texas, who had her own ingrained habits, couldn't just quit smoking in a short period of time.

At the very least, she needed something else to distract her.

"Hold on a sec. Texas, you wait here, don't move. I'm going to go buy some snacks."

Just as Texas was about to get in the car, Lucifer suddenly stopped her and then headed toward a nearby supermarket.

Texas tilted her head, not understanding what Lucifer was up to, but she had a feeling he was playfully taking advantage of her.

Thanks to Brother Tiger's "kind donation," Lucifer had no trouble buying a whole bag full of snacks from the supermarket, just in case his life at Penguin Logistics was destined to be nothing but instant noodles.

"...You bought so much. You really know how to enjoy life."

Texas glanced over the contents: chocolate, cookies, cakes—he had it all.

"I've worked for two days straight. Can't I treat myself a little?"

These snacks, available in any random Lungmen supermarket, were extremely rare luxuries back in Kazdel. Not even the Sarkaz King or the lords of the Royal Court could afford to indulge so freely. He, Lucifer, had spent two hundred years in Kazdel. Now that he was finally in Lungmen, couldn't he enjoy himself?

Texas didn't pay him much mind and got into the driver's seat, preparing to start the car. But at that moment, Lucifer, in the passenger seat, handed her a small box of snacks.

"Use this when you get a craving. You hold it in your mouth either way. It's not like we're tasting a state banquet, so it's close enough."

"..."

Texas turned her head and saw a box of chocolate sticks called Pocky.

She wanted to ask if Lucifer was in his right mind, but her body silently accepted the box anyway. Unsure if it was out of compliance or her own curiosity, Texas tore open the packaging, slid out a Pocky stick, and held it in her mouth like a cigarette.

There was a faint, sweet taste.

"...Not bad."

A small smile appeared on Texas's face.

However, when she turned back, she saw Lucifer with a look of utter despair, as if his world was ending, grabbing a handful of Pocky and stuffing them into his own mouth.

"..."

Texas's smile slowly vanished.

Before Lucifer had a chance to buckle his seatbelt, Texas slammed her foot on the accelerator. The powerful force pushed him back into his seat, causing him to be tragically assassinated by Pocky.
