(RBT) Chapter 46: Did Lucifer Get Wrecked?

"Didn't you say you wanted to experience the 'Showa romance'?"

Texas glanced at Lucifer, who was sitting in the passenger seat of her new car.

After working separately for the past couple of days, Texas had discovered that Lucifer did indeed have driving experience and even knew a thing or two about traffic laws.

But after just a few days, he was back in her car, slacking off.

"I haven't found any unlucky saps or big chumps to train yet."

Lucifer shifted in the passenger seat, finding a more comfortable position. With no new employees, the Showa-era jeep's true potential had yet to be revealed. Besides, who was Lucifer going to "brutally train" with the jeep? Himself? He was the Jeep Star-person and the Crutch Tyrant; that just didn't make sense.

"And what does that have to do with you sitting in my car?"

"Slacking off ain't a crime."

If the day's delivery schedule wasn't too packed, Lucifer would usually choose to work with Texas rather than doing a solo speedrun.

"Do whatever makes you happy."

After spending so much time together, Texas had more or less gotten used to Lucifer's personality. But "getting used to it" didn't mean she could actually predict his train of thought.

"Hey now, come and eat."

Lucifer pulled out a box of Pocky from somewhere and offered it to Texas, who was driving.

"You carry this stuff around with you? ...Don't mess around, I'm driving."

"At the speed you're going, a light graze could send someone on a one-way trip to another world. Don't act like a model student trying to farm good karma."

With that, Lucifer pulled out a Pocky stick and held it right in front of Texas's face.

Texas wanted to refuse, but seeing the completely clear road ahead, her body honestly leaned down and quickly bit onto the Pocky stick Lucifer was feeding her.

This kind of playful interaction between a driver and a passenger was clearly illegal. But as previously established, neither Lucifer nor Texas had a legal driver's license in Lungmen. As they say, to make it on the streets, you need power and connections. When it comes to Penguin Logistics, it's best not to ask too many questions.

"Don't eat all my Pocky."

"Just remember to be safe."

With a Pocky stick in her mouth, Texas waved at Lucifer, who was carrying a package. Perhaps because she vaguely sensed that Lucifer was much stronger than her, she rarely made deliveries herself anymore. Besides, Lucifer seemed much more easygoing than her, which could effectively avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble.

Of course, if any real trouble did pop up, Texas would still be the first on the scene to kill-steal.

"..."

Leaning against the window, Texas was staring blankly at the bustling street when she suddenly noticed a terminal store across the road. As if an idea struck her, she glanced back to confirm Lucifer hadn't returned, then got out of the car and walked across the street.

By the time Lucifer got back from his delivery, Texas was already waiting in the driver's seat.

But Lucifer still lost his composure.

"You finished the entire box of Pocky? Who's going to make up for my chocolate deficiency now?"

It wasn't just Texas who was getting addicted to Pocky; Lucifer also had a great interest in these sweet snacks, especially anything chocolate-related. If he were ever pushed into withdrawal, he might just grab Texas's hands and chant: Onegai, without chocolate, watashi...

"You were just too slow."

"My bad."

Faced with Texas's sharp critique, Lucifer immediately surrendered. Yep, yep, yep, that was my fault, bad play on my part.

However, in the time it took Texas to buckle her seatbelt, she saw Lucifer pull out another box of Pocky from some 4D pocket.

"You... just how many of these did you bring?"

Texas was quite surprised, not expecting Lucifer to be so extra.

But Lucifer, having been "betrayed" by Texas, would never smile again. He had no intention of sharing with her anymore.

"Are you steamed? You're not helping the ware?"

"..."

Her face falling into a deep sullen expression, Texas ignored Lucifer and instead gripped the steering wheel.

This action immediately made Lucifer, who was about to shove a handful in his mouth, freeze.

"I'll eat them one by one, just don't wreck me."

"Heh..."

After delivering the remaining packages, Lucifer finally finished the day's work with Texas, returning to the dorms safe and sound. The two of them, like a couple who knew each other inside and out, took off their jackets right in front of each other without any concern for privacy.

"I must immediately enter veg-out mode."

"Not so fast."

Just as Lucifer was about to pioneer the art of doing nothing, Texas suddenly stopped him. Lucifer thought she was about to get even with him for earlier, but instead, Texas just pulled a terminal from her pocket and tossed it to him.

"A phone?"

"Looks like you're not unfamiliar with this. Good, that saves a lot of trouble."

Texas had known Lucifer for over half a month and realized he didn't even seem to have his own phone, so she had bought one for him out of her own pocket.

"I've already exchanged our contact info. Now we can get in touch anytime. You can also use the app to see what our previous clients thought of Penguin Logistics."

"...Did Emperor reimburse you?"

"No, but I've saved up some money. It's just a terminal, it didn't cost much."

Texas leaned back on the sofa casually, grabbing a few scattered Pocky sticks from the table and popping them in her mouth.

"I should pay you back, right?"

To be honest, Lucifer wasn't the type of leech who could accept things from others with a clear conscience. It always felt like they had some kind of leverage over him.

"Whatever you want. Or you could compensate me in other ways."

"Explain in detail."

"Go cook me a couple of dishes?"

"You might as well just kill me."

That condition was a little too difficult for Lucifer.

Seeing this, Texas didn't complain. She had intended it as a gift between friends anyway.

"How about I go farm some gold coins from Emperor for you?"

Although Lucifer didn't know how many Lungmen Dollars the terminal cost, Emperor had been alive for so long, shaking him down for a few hundred thousand shouldn't be a problem.

"I already said you don't have to pay me back... unless you're going to make a vow or something?"

"That's not out of the question."

"You're pretty traditional."

"It's how we do things back home."

Lucifer shrugged. Back in Kazdel, the more noble your status, the more you valued your credit and honor.

Hearing this, Texas's interest was piqued.

"Then I'm curious. Am I the first person you've made a promise with?"

"Nope. You'll have to get in line."
