The hallway was silent except for the faint hum of the central heating. She kept her eyes down as she walked past the tall mirrors lining the corridor, refusing to look at her own gaunt reflection.
Her grip tightened around the suitcase handle as she carefully descended the grand staircase, each polished marble step echoing like a drumbeat of dread in her chest.
As she reached the bottom, her eyes flickered towards the sitting area while she checked the entire place carefully, but she knew Shen Xiao wouldn't care.
Bai Zhi was seated elegantly on the cream leather couch, one leg crossed over the other. Her hair was styled perfectly in a sleek bun, her delicate face adorned with a faint smile as she scrolled leisurely through her phone.
Beside her, Shen Xuan sat on a small cushioned stool, building Lego pieces on the coffee table. He looked up the moment he heard footsteps.
His eyes widened in confusion and fear when he saw Yueyao clutching her small suitcase, her coat draped limply over her thin arm.
"Mommy…?" his small voice trembled. "Mommy, where are you going? Are you leaving…? Don't leave… please don't leave me…"
Yueyao didn't even glance at him.
Her face remained blank, her eyes dull and lifeless as she kept walking, as though his cries were nothing but the buzzing of a distant fly.
There was no pity in her heart, no warmth, no lingering affection. Only a deep, suffocating disgust twisted in her chest at the mere sound of his voice.
She quickened her pace towards the exit door, ignoring his wails as they grew louder behind her.
But before she could reach the foyer, two tall men in black suits suddenly emerged from the shadows. Their cold eyes locked onto her as they moved swiftly to block her path.
Her eyes widened in shock as one of them snatched the suitcase from her grip and tossed it aside, the contents scattering across the gleaming floor with a muffled thud.
"No… no, please…!" she cried out, reaching desperately for her things, but the other man grabbed her wrist in a bruising grip and yanked her back upright.
She could only look at her scattered things on the floor, why were they blocking her? She doesn't recall her committing any crime...
"What are you doing?"
"Let go of me..." She felt nauseated from his touch and she immediately swatted his arm away taking a step back as she heavily trembled feeling goosebumps. Her throat retched heavily and felt like she wanted to vomit.
Shen Xuan's cries also rose into frantic sobs, but Yueyao didn't spare him a single glance as he struggled against Bai Zhi's hold.
"Mommy! Let go of my mommy! Let her go!"
Bai Zhi reached out calmly and grabbed Shen Xuan by the shoulders, pulling him back into her lap. Her lips curled into a cold, amused smile as she stroked his hair soothingly.
"Don't cry, Xuan'er. Mommy Zhi is here. Your real mommy just doesn't want to stay with us anymore."
At that moment, a cold, familiar voice cut through the chaos like a blade.
"Bring her here."
Shen Xiao stepped out from the archway near the dining room, his black suit crisp and pristine, his tall frame radiating a terrifying aura of dominance.
In his hand were the freshly printed divorce papers she had filed only few minutes ago and he already received them.
His dark eyes burned with a stormy fury as he strode towards her, his shoes clicking sharply against the polished marble floor with each measured step.
