Chapter 24: Shadows of Vengeance

🕯️ Location: Verdale City – Abandoned Industrial Complex – 2:13 AM

The echoes of gunfire still lingered in the cold air. Smoke coiled through shattered windows, dancing in the broken beams of moonlight that filtered into the crumbling complex. Footsteps pounded through puddles of dirty water, mixed with the iron scent of blood.

Liana pressed her back against a rusted steel pillar, her chest heaving. Her fingers trembled slightly—not from fear, but from rage that simmered beneath her skin.

—"Daniel, report!" she hissed through her earpiece.

Static.

Then his voice, strained, panting.

—"I'm pinned... northeast wing. Two hostiles... maybe three. They've got thermal."

Her eyes darkened. They were closing in faster than expected. And worse... Specter was still out there. Somewhere.

---

Suddenly, a crash echoed from the upper scaffolding. She spun, gun raised—just in time to see a figure dropping like a shadow.

BANG—BANG.

Her shots rang out, but the figure rolled, vanishing behind a stack of crates.

Her breath quickened.

—"Not good... not good..." she muttered.

Then… a voice. Distorted. Filtered. Bone-chilling.

—"You're quick... but not quick enough, Echo."

Her blood froze.

Specter.

His voice was a razor dipped in ice. Emotionless. Mechanical. The sound of death itself.

—"You can't outrun your past, Liana."

—"Watch me," she growled.

---

She bolted, sprinting through the maze of rusted machinery. Bullets hissed past her head, smashing pipes, sending sparks flying. A grenade rolled toward her.

—"Crap!"

She dove—BOOM. The explosion rocked the floor, sending waves of dust and shrapnel.

As she scrambled to her feet, her earpiece crackled.

—"Liana... MOVE!" Daniel's voice screamed.

She turned—just as Specter lunged out of the smoke, blade drawn.

Steel met steel. Her knife blocked his first strike, barely. Sparks flew. His strength was inhuman, forcing her back. Another swing. Another block. His movements were precise, mechanical—every strike aimed to kill.

—"You're predictable," he said flatly.

—"And you talk too much," she spat, kicking him hard in the ribs.

He staggered—but not enough. He came back, faster.

---

From the shadows, Daniel emerged, rifle raised.

—"HEY!" he yelled, firing.

RAT-TAT-TAT.

Specter spun, dodging bullets like a phantom, sliding behind a pillar. But it was enough time. Liana grabbed Daniel's arm.

—"Move! Stairs, now!"

They sprinted toward the back stairwell. Footsteps thundered behind them.

Reaching the upper level, Daniel slammed the door shut behind them, wedging a steel beam across the handle.

—"That won't hold him long," Daniel panted.

—"Doesn't have to."

She yanked open a control panel, fingers flying over the switches.

—"What are you—?"

—"Flood valves. This place... used to be a chemical plant."

She flipped the last switch. A loud groan echoed as old pipes shuddered awake.

Down below—hissing. Steam. Liquid pouring into the lower levels.

Daniel's eyes widened.

—"Tell me you're not—"

—"When in doubt..." she grabbed his arm.

—"Blow everything up."

---

An explosion rocked the far side of the building. Flames burst through a wall. The fire spread fast—feeding on decades-old chemicals, oil, and dust.

They sprinted across a catwalk, but Specter was already there—waiting.

His glowing visor reflected the flames, like a demon stepping out of hell.

—"End of the line," he said.

Without warning, a sniper round whizzed from the darkness—SLAM. Specter jerked back, hit in the shoulder.

—"WHAT?!" Daniel gasped.

From a rooftop nearby—a silhouette. Female. Holding a massive sniper rifle.

—"Told you two idiots you'd need me."

Liana's mouth dropped.

—"Kara?!"

Daniel blinked. —"Wait... I thought she was—"

—"Dead? Yeah, you and everyone else."

Kara reloaded smoothly. —"Less talking. More running. Extraction's in 4 minutes."

Specter recovered fast—too fast. He ripped the bulletproof plate off his shoulder like it was paper.

—"You won't escape," his voice distorted, angrier now.

Liana aimed her gun.

—"Wanna bet?"

BOOM—another explosion ripped through the floor beneath Specter. He dropped, swallowed by fire and collapsing steel.

—"MOVE!!" Kara shouted.

🔥 4 Minutes Later – Rooftop Extraction Point

The helicopter hovered, wind whipping their faces. Kara shoved Daniel into it first, then Liana followed.

As the chopper lifted, the entire complex went up in a fireball—shockwaves rattling the air.

Daniel collapsed against the seat, panting. —"Is... is he dead?"

Kara shook her head, serious. —"Someone like him doesn't die that easy."

Liana stared out the window, jaw clenched.

—"Then we'll be ready."

But as the city burned beneath them, none of them noticed the shadow crawling from the wreckage... broken, battered...

But very much alive.

A mechanical voice whispered through a cracked comm:

—"Phase three... initiated."
