Chapter 7: The Veins of the World

Chapter 7: The Veins of the World

The storm had passed, but the silence it left behind was heavier than the roar of the serpent.

Kai stood at the edge of the flooded tunnel, his bow still glowing with the marks of the Hydrofang. Water dripped from his cloak, his heart steady but alert. Behind him, the Water Goblin stood idle, shimmering faintly in the dim light. The battle was over, but something deeper had begun.

Footsteps echoed.

From the shadows beyond the tunnel entrance, two figures emerged — not monsters, but people. Their presence snapped Kai's senses into focus. The first was a woman, clad in dark navy robes, her staff crackling lightly with arcane sparks. The second, a tall, scarred man with dual swords strapped to his back, moved like a predator.

"Kai?" the woman asked.

He aimed his bow instinctively but paused. "How do you know my name?"

"We've been tracking elemental surges," she said, eyes scanning the ruined area. "That… thing you just fought. It wasn't a normal dungeon boss."

"No," Kai replied. "It wasn't."

The man stepped forward. "Name's Juno. This is Elira. Vanguard Guild."

Kai didn't lower his weapon. "What do you want?"

"Answers," Elira said. "But more importantly — allies."

---

They sat around a small campfire outside the tunnel. Elira had used wind magic to dry the area. Juno cleaned his blades in silence.

"You're not a normal class user," Elira said. "You don't have a badge, you don't use standard gear, and no system marker reads your level."

Kai said nothing.

"We think your power's tied to something older. The elements. The rift anomalies. We've seen signs before, but never like this."

Kai's fingers flexed around his bow. "I didn't choose this."

"No one does," Juno muttered. "But it chooses someone."

Elira pulled out a tablet. "A map of elemental nodes. This city rests on a crossing point — a place where elemental veins intersect underground. The Water Element was waiting to awaken. You were the conduit."

"And the serpent?" Kai asked.

"A guardian," she replied. "Testing you. Each node likely has one."

"So this is just the beginning."

Elira nodded. "If your system is what we think it is — Elemental Soul Link — then the other elements will find you eventually."

Juno stood. "Which means you'll need more than just a goblin and a bow."

"I can handle myself."

Juno smirked. "Sure. But you'll do better if you're not alone."

Kai glanced at the Water Goblin, then back to the two guild members.

For the first time, he didn't feel completely isolated.

Maybe… this was how it began.
