Chapter 8: The Trial of Trust
The ruins of Sector 7 were quieter now, but the city still bore scars of elemental upheaval. Steam hissed from shattered pipes, and puddles shimmered with faint traces of mana. Elira, Juno, and Kai walked through the debris-strewn street with purpose, following Elira's map toward the Vanguard Guild's temporary outpost.
As they crossed a collapsed walkway, Juno glanced at Kai. "You ever worked with a team before?"
Kai shook his head. "No. I usually survive alone."
"That's going to change."
They reached a steel gate embedded in what used to be a subway station. After Elira traced a wind sigil over the lock, the metal screeched open. The Vanguard base buzzed with activity—mages consulting monitors, fighters sharpening weapons, and healers tending to wounded guild members. The chaos was strangely organized.
"This way," Elira said.
They led Kai through narrow tunnels and into a chamber glowing with blue crystal veins embedded in the walls. The air felt heavier here, charged with the same elemental pulse Kai had sensed during the serpent fight.
A woman in crimson armor stepped forward, her aura commanding. Her short black hair was streaked with silver, and her badge read: **Commander Yvaine**.
"So this is the one?" she asked.
Elira nodded. "He passed the first elemental trial."
Yvaine stepped closer, examining Kai. "You've awakened something we've been watching for years — a pure elemental link. We don't know if that makes you a savior or a threat."
Kai remained silent.
She turned away. "Prove you're worth the risk. There's a corrupted mana beast nesting in the old power plant. Kill it. Do it alone. We'll be watching."
---
The power plant stood like a steel skeleton, cracked and half-swallowed by nature. Moss covered the walls, and twisted metal jutted out like broken bones. As Kai stepped through the rusted entrance, his Water Goblin emerged behind him, summoned silently by thought.
"Stay alert," he murmured.
The interior was dark, but his eyes adjusted quickly. The mana beast revealed itself with a guttural screech — a mutated ogre, its skin pulsing with red veins of corrupted energy. Its eyes burned like embers.
Kai leapt back as the beast charged. He summoned his bow, now bearing serpent runes, and loosed a water-formed arrow. The shot hit its mark, but the ogre barely flinched.
"Too slow."
The Goblin dashed forward, striking from below. It drew the beast's attention, long enough for Kai to reposition.
He focused.
**"Soul Link: Channel Burst!"**
Water exploded from his bow as he fired a three-arrow volley, each one infused with elemental pressure. They struck the beast's legs, freezing its joints. The Goblin followed with a high slash, shattering the ice and severing a tendon.
The ogre roared and swiped wildly, catching Kai in the side. Pain flared, but he rolled and launched a final arrow — not at the ogre, but at a cracked overhead pipe.
Steam erupted.
The room flooded in vapor. The Water Goblin disappeared into the mist.
Seconds passed.
The goblin reappeared inside the beast's blind spot, blade plunging deep. Kai followed, releasing a final shot that pierced the ogre's heart.
The beast fell.
Its corrupted mana rose like smoke, dispersing.
From behind, Yvaine's voice echoed through a projection sigil. "Mission complete. Return. We have more to discuss."
Kai stood in the silence, his breath steady. He had proven himself again — not just to them.
But to the power within.
