Chapter 9: Echoes of the Fallen
The journey back from the power plant was quiet. Kai walked alone this time, his Water Goblin dissipated back into elemental mist. He had won — but the price was pain and doubt. The wound on his side throbbed with each step. Still, he felt a strange satisfaction, not because he killed a corrupted beast, but because he had finally chosen to walk toward something — not just survive it.
When he returned to the Vanguard base, Commander Yvaine was waiting.
"You did better than expected," she said. "We'll be watching your progress, but don't think we owe you anything."
"I didn't come for approval," Kai replied.
She smirked, almost amused. "Good. That will make it easier."
---
Later, Elira and Juno brought Kai to a quiet corridor lined with rune-sealed rooms. Elira keyed open one and motioned for him to enter.
"Rest here. There's more coming," she said.
Kai nodded. "Thanks… for earlier. For the backup. Even if I didn't need it."
Juno chuckled. "Don't thank us yet. You're not officially a member until you pass your next evaluation."
---
That night, Kai dreamed.
He stood in a field of stars, weightless, surrounded by orbs of shifting color. Each pulsed with an elemental aura — fire, wind, earth, lightning, ice... but only one glowed steadily.
**Water.**
Then, a voice echoed in the darkness.
*"Chosen bearer of the Elemental Soul Link. You are bound not only to the elements... but to the remnants of those who fell in their service."*
The water orb drew closer, revealing the form of his goblin — calm, spectral, kneeling.
*"This is only the beginning. Each element remembers. Each soul echoes."*
Kai reached out — and the vision shattered.
He woke with a gasp, heart pounding, sweat beading down his face.
---
The next morning, Kai met Elira and Juno outside the base. They were prepping for a recon mission into the outskirts of the next city zone. But before they could leave, a figure approached — a young man with a bandaged eye and a sword strapped to his back.
"This him?" the boy asked Elira.
She nodded. "Kai, meet Vann. Scout, Vanguard second-tier. He'll be joining us today."
Vann extended a hand. "Don't slow me down."
Kai hesitated, then shook it. "Same to you."
As they moved out, Juno raised an eyebrow. "Anyone else think it's weird we're being sent just to observe a dead zone?"
Elira frowned. "Not just observe. The scouts said something's been stirring beneath the surface. Some kind of elemental disturbance."
Kai's thoughts drifted. If elements chose their host... what kind of monster would a corrupted element choose?
He was about to find out.
