Chapter 10: The Buried Flame

Chapter 10: The Buried Flame

The ruins of the dead zone stretched out like a scar in the earth. What was once a thriving commercial sector now lay buried under collapsed towers, blackened streets, and craters left behind by elemental anomalies. The sky above it dimmed unnaturally, even though the sun still hung overhead.

Kai followed Elira, Juno, and Vann across broken roads and twisted rebar. The four of them moved like shadows, silent and watchful.

"This place doesn't just feel dead," Juno muttered. "It's angry."

Elira nodded. "This zone had a Fire Node once. But something corrupted it."

Kai paused. "What happens when an element is corrupted?"

"Elira?" Vann said, keeping his hand on his sword. "You explain it better."

She glanced back. "A corrupted element loses balance. It twists the monsters that live nearby, mutating them. But worse — it tries to infect living elemental users. That's why only a few of us came. Too many people would trigger a response."

They entered what was left of a plaza. At its center stood the remnants of a broken shrine — a half-melted statue of a flame goddess, her arms reaching upward in a plea for salvation. Around it, ash fell like snow.

Kai's elemental sense twitched.

"There's something here," he said.

The others stopped. Elira drew a short wand. Vann nocked an arrow. Juno's fists lit up faintly with mana.

Without warning, the ground beneath them exploded.

From the cracked earth emerged a beast twice the size of a van, its body a mass of molten bone and flame. It had no face — just a burning core where a chest should be. Chains of seared stone clung to its arms and back.

"Corrupted Flamebound Titan!" Elira shouted. "Spread out!"

The team scattered. The beast roared, sending a burst of fire in all directions.

Kai leapt behind rubble and called forth his Water Goblin. The summon emerged, already weaving water around them defensively. But it was clear — water alone wouldn't be enough.

"Distract it!" Kai shouted. Vann loosed a flurry of arrows at its joints while Juno leapt in with mana-charged punches that exploded on impact.

Elira muttered a chant and fired a blast of wind that staggered the titan for only a moment.

Kai focused. The flames were alive. They weren't just heat — they were memory, rage, pain. His body ached as he reached out with his elemental link.

A voice echoed in his head, not from the Water Goblin — but from the shrine.

*"Do not force what is not yet yours. Only what welcomes you may be wielded."*

He grit his teeth. "I'm not here to steal power. I want to protect them."

The flame in the shrine pulsed, then dimmed.

Kai's water arrows formed rapidly. He leapt onto a broken wall, drew the bow, and fired a charged shot at the titan's core.

The arrow pierced it.

The flame inside exploded in a burst of steam, and the titan collapsed, molten limbs crashing into the plaza with a quake.

As the ash cleared, the shrine behind them burned with a soft, flickering blue fire.

Elira stared at it. "That shouldn't be possible. The corrupted node... it just calmed down."

Kai lowered his bow. "It didn't reject us. Not this time."

Vann blinked. "You sure you're not some elemental priest or something?"

Juno clapped Kai on the shoulder. "Whatever you are, we need it."

Kai looked at the shrine and said nothing. Deep inside, the water within him rippled — but the fire remained watching.
