Chapter 12: Echoes of the Past
Kai followed Elira down the winding staircases of the Guild's lower chambers, descending farther than he had ever gone before. The torches on the stone walls flickered with blue and green flame—magic fire, calm and cold. It felt ancient, like this place had been forgotten by time.
They reached a thick metal door, etched with dozens of glowing runes. Elira pressed her palm to the seal, and with a deep hiss, it opened.
Inside, the Guild Master waited.
He was a tall, silver-eyed man with a presence that felt like standing at the edge of a cliff. He wore robes laced with elemental threads—each line glowing faintly with a different hue. At his side hovered a stone orb, crackling with miniature lightning bolts.
"So," the Guild Master said. "You're the Soul Linker."
Kai stood still. "I am."
"You brought balance to a corrupted node. Do you understand how rare that is?"
"No," Kai admitted.
The man waved him forward. "Come. Let me show you something."
He guided Kai to a pedestal at the room's center, where a black stone rested, pulsing with light. The air around it shimmered.
"This is a Memory Stone," the Guild Master said. "It records echoes of elemental events. Hold it, and see what came before."
Kai reached out. The moment his fingers brushed the surface, the world around him shifted.
---
He was standing in a burning city. Screams echoed from alleyways. Buildings crumbled into cinders. Above it all, a figure stood on a pillar of flame—white-haired like Kai, wielding a spear forged from living fire.
Around them, flaming beasts battled each other, tearing through structures with mindless rage.
The figure raised their hand and shouted a word Kai didn't understand. The fire surged, consuming both enemies and allies.
Then—darkness. Screams. Silence.
---
Kai staggered back, gasping.
The Guild Master caught his arm. "That was the last known Soul Linker. They were consumed by their own power. By the fire they thought they had mastered."
Kai clenched his fists. "I won't end like that."
The man studied him. "Perhaps not. But the elements are not tools, boy. They are voices. Memories. You must listen, not command."
Kai looked at the Memory Stone, still pulsing.
"I want to do better," he said. "I want to protect, not destroy."
The Guild Master smiled faintly. "Then you may yet walk a different path."
As Kai left the chamber, the flame in his chest felt warmer—but heavier. The burden of those who came before now rested on his shoulders.
