Chapter 13: Whispers Beneath the Ashes
The plaza still steamed from the titan's collapse, but the quiet that followed was uneasy. The blue fire at the shrine's base flickered faintly, casting long shadows across the cracked stones and scorched rubble. Kai stood closest, his white hair matted with sweat and soot, his bow still clutched tightly in one hand. The scent of ash lingered heavy in the air.
Elira, Juno, and Vann circled the perimeter, their movements wary, like hunters expecting a second strike. No one spoke at first. The tension wasn't from fear—but from something else. Reverence. Confusion.
"This place doesn't just feel dead," Juno muttered, crouching near the shrine. "It's like it's remembering us."
Kai knelt and extended his hand toward the blue flame. It flared slightly—not in anger, but recognition. A warm pulse rippled through his fingers and up his arm, settling near his heart.
"Elira," he asked quietly, "Can an element choose someone?"
She approached slowly. "Elements aren't like us. They don't think, but they... respond. To emotions. Intent. And sometimes, when something ancient enough recognizes someone new\... it lingers."
Kai nodded, remembering the voice that spoke to him during the battle—the voice not from the Water Goblin, but from something older. The flame hadn't been his enemy. It had been a test.
"The fire didn't attack me," he said. "It waited. Watched."
"Not many elemental users survive corrupted zones," Elira said. "Fewer still leave with the flame calm." She narrowed her eyes. "You didn't just survive, Kai. You changed the node's nature."
The others looked at him differently now—not as a rookie with a strange power, but as someone walking a path that none of them fully understood.

Later that evening, the group returned to the Guild's underground base. While the others went to debrief, Kai stayed behind in the central hall, seated in silence on the training floor's cool stone. The lights above buzzed softly.
He summoned his Water Goblin again. It emerged faster than before, its body more defined, eyes glowing faintly with blue light. Water wrapped its arms in spirals, forming thin whips or claws depending on its stance.
"You've grown stronger too," Kai whispered. "I don't think it's just me evolving... it's us."
The Goblin tilted its head and mirrored Kai's movements as he stood and took a slow stance. Bow in hand, he performed a simple draw-and-fire motion, and the Goblin did the same—only its arrows were made of spinning water.
"I didn't choose water," Kai said, lowering the bow. "But it chose me. Or maybe... the first soul it touched did."
As he dismissed the summon, a faint ripple of elemental energy echoed through the room. He could feel it—like something distant stirring beneath the surface.
Someone entered behind him. It was Elira.
"Guild Master wants a word," she said, arms crossed. "And you should know—he's not easy to impress."
Kai glanced at the empty air where his summon had stood.
"Let's see if I can change that too."
