Gospel of Painkillers (2)

Ragnar and Merlina strolled toward the crying boy and his mother.

"What happened?" Ragnar asked in a caring tone.

The woman looked up at him, sadness in her eyes, and replied, "He was running away when I called him for his morning bath and slammed into the walls of the house, hitting his stomach really hard."

Ragnar found her story quite amusing as he could picture the scene of the naked little boy running and slamming into the walls.

Nevertheless, he kept a calm face and squatted to examine the body of the wailing child.

"Ahh, my stomach, it hurts," the little boy cried even louder. "This is all because of stupid morning baths! I hate morning baths! Waaa!"

"Do you want to grow up to become a stinking monkey?" Ragnar asked in a soft tone.

"No, I don't wanna."

"Then don't skip your morning bath. If you do, you would grow up to be an ugly monkey, and none of the ladies in the village would agree to marry you. Do you want that?"

Hearing Ragnar's reasoning, the boy cried even louder and promised he would always take his morning bath. Both Merlina and the mother could not help but chuckle.

Nevertheless, he continued crying as the pain in his stomach did not subside. Both women felt pity for him.

While everyone's attention was fixed on the wailing child, Ragnar swiftly opened his inventory and brought out a painkiller.

"Please, can you fetch me a cup of water?" Ragnar asked the mother politely.

She nodded and went inside to fetch water in a wooden cup, then passed it to Ragnar. He then revealed the white tablet in his hands, to the surprise of Merlina and the mother.

"What is that?" Merlina and the mother asked, curious.

"Watch closely," Ragnar responded.

He figured it would be better for them to observe its miraculous effect with their own eyes than to explain it to them.

Ragnar handed the painkiller tablet to the little boy and instructed him to swallow it with the cup of water.

The little boy complied and swallowed the tablet. Both Merlina and his mother watched him with interest.

Ragnar stood up from his crouch and observed the child.

For the first few seconds, there was no reaction, and even after a minute had passed, the little boy was still clutching his stomach, sobbing.

About three minutes later, his sobbing halted and his eyes brightened.

He looked up at his mother with excitement. "The pain is gone!"

"What!" she exclaimed.

She was the only one who saw how hard her son slammed against the wall. He was running really fast, and the wound should have taken a long time to even settle down. But now he was claiming that the pain was gone just a few minutes after swallowing a tiny white, ordinary-looking substance?

It was unbelievable.

"Big brother Ragnar, what did you give me? It works wonders!"

The cheerfulness of the little boy returned. He stood up and hugged Ragnar's legs while demanding the name of the strange white tablet he had been given.

Ragnar patted his head and turned to the two women, who stared at him with looks demanding answers.

"It's called a painkiller," Ragnar said. "As the name suggests, it eases pain from injuries or illness."

"Painkiller? I haven't heard of that before."

"It sounds like a generic name for a healing spell," Merlina reacted before asking, "Where did you get it from?"

"I cannot reveal the answer now," Ragnar smiled, "but it is something related to the ancestors who revived me."

Onyx began one of her troublesome taunts, but Ragnar ignored her.

"The ancestors?"

"Yes," Ragnar nodded. "There is a wealth of knowledge and magical items that the ancestors have blessed me with. This is just one of them. In the future, more will be revealed. They will help us escape our poor lives and reach higher heights."

Ragnar's short explanation was able to convince the two women.

If the gods could revive him from death, giving him miraculous drugs was nothing for them.

Hope and excitement welled up in their hearts as they listened to him intently.

Merlina felt somewhat betrayed that Ragnar had not informed her about this beforehand despite their closeness.

Nevertheless, she shook her head, thinking, 'He has lost the memories of all the good and bad times we shared, that is why.'

At that moment, the child's mother asked about the other illnesses and injuries the painkiller could treat, and Ragnar patiently indulged her curiosity by answering as best as he could.

"That is great! It will work wonders for our people. The ancestors are truly with you, Ragnar," she said happily, relief shining in her eyes.

Even Merlina could not help but appreciate the ancestors on Ragnar's behalf.

While the three grown-ups continued their discussion, the little boy who had just recovered tiptoed away unnoticed.

Once he'd put some distance between them, he bellowed in a loud, playful voice, "Mom, look! You can't catch me! I'm skipping morning bath today, haha!"

After that, he sprinted off without a shred of shame about being naked.

Both Ragnar, the mother, and Merlina stared at his tiny naked figure sprinting off, resignation on their faces.

"Just let him be today," Ragnar suggested.

The mother nodded, chuckling. "I'll have to devise new means to get that little devil into his morning bath from now on."

Ragnar and Merlina laughed, bade the woman farewell, and walked away.
