chapter 4

Angel lay sprawled on the couch, her left hand curled around a bowl of chips as she lazily watched TV. The soft hum of the show filled the room until the front door opened. Dave and Alvin walked in, each taking a seat beside her—one on the left, the other on the right.

"Angel, we need to talk," Alvin said, his tone calm but firm.

"Sure thing, bro. I'm listening," Angel replied, her eyes still fixed on the screen as she shoved a chip into her mouth.

"Angel," Alvin called again, this time more sharply.

She immediately sat upright and turned off the TV. That tone was serious. She could feel it.

"So, what's this talk about? Have you both finally decided to get married or something?" she asked, smirking.

Alvin didn't answer right away. He simply gave her that classic older-brother look that said: Get serious, young lady.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry," Angel muttered. "Why so tense? Hand the lecture over to Dave—he's usually the serious one."

Dave didn't crack a smile. He looked directly at her. "We called this meeting to talk about your school."

Angel's heart skipped a beat.

"You remember we had to pull you out just before your second year started," he continued. "That was our fault. We made some poor business decisions, and it cost you. But things have changed. The business has grown—much bigger than we ever imagined. Which means…" He paused, then smiled. "You're going back to college."

Angel froze.

Then— "Oh my gosh," she whispered, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Oh my gosh, are you serious?"

Tears rushed to her eyes as her hand flew to her mouth. She looked from Dave to Alvin and saw them both smiling. Nothing meant more to them than seeing their little sister happy again.

"But," Alvin added, "there's just one condition—you have to pass the test first."

Angel nodded quickly, still in tears. "I will. I promise. I love you both so much."

"We love you too," Alvin said, pulling her into a hug. Dave wrapped his arms around her as well, and for a moment, the three of them sat there, wrapped in a rare moment of quiet joy.

Then Angel's phone began to ring.

"Excuse me," she said, pulling away and checking the screen. "It's Lisa."

She grabbed her coat as she stood. "My brothers just told me I'm going back to school!" she exclaimed into the phone, heading toward her room.

"I'm so happy for you!" Lisa squealed on the other end as Angel disappeared down the hallway, still giddy with excitement.

Dave stayed seated, smiling after her. "Seeing her this happy makes me happy too," he said softly.

"I know, right?" Alvin replied, his grin just as wide.

Just then, Dave's phone rang. He checked the screen—Samantha.

Alvin caught the flicker of tension in his expression. "Who's that?"

Dave quickly slid the phone into his pocket and stood up. "No one. Just a friend."

"A 'friend,' huh?" Alvin repeated, lifting a brow and adding exaggerated air quotes. "Since when do you get weird about your friends?"

"Someone you don't know," Dave muttered, already walking away.

"You better tell me," Alvin called, jumping to his feet. "You can't keep secrets from me, bro!"

"I'm not keeping anything," Dave said with a nervous laugh.

"Oh, you totally are," Alvin said, following him out. "And I'm going to find out exactly what."

Their voices faded down the hallway—half-joking, half-serious. Meanwhile, Angel's laughter echoed faintly from her room as she shared the news with Lisa.

But in the background, unnoticed for now, Samantha's call went unanswered.

And whatever she had to say… wasn't going to stay buried for long
