I stared at my phone screen, my finger hovering over Chloe's number. My heart pounded as I tried to work up the courage to make this call. After everything that had happened with Camille and Adrian, I needed an escape plan.
The training grounds were quiet this afternoon. I'd found a secluded spot behind the equipment shed where nobody could overhear me. Taking a deep breath, I finally pressed call.
"Well, look who finally remembered she has a best friend," Chloe answered on the third ring, her voice a mixture of relief and irritation.
"I'm sorry," I said, keeping my voice low. "Things have been... complicated."
"Complicated is what you call a math problem. Your life is a disaster movie." She sighed. "Are you okay? You sound weird."
I glanced around to make sure I was still alone. "I need to ask you something important."
"Shoot."
The words caught in my throat. How do you tell your best friend you're about to become homeless?
"Sera? You still there?" Chloe prompted.
