My heart sank to my stomach as I ended the call with Chloe. I stared at my phone, feeling utterly lost. My last lifeline had just been severed. Where was I supposed to go now? The thought of going back home, where my mother would force me to move in with the Bennetts—with Julian—made me physically ill.
I leaned against the wall, trying to steady my breathing. I couldn't let Leo see me like this. The poor kid had enough to worry about without his tutor having a breakdown in front of him.
"Get it together, Sera," I whispered to myself, closing my eyes.
"Bad news?"
The deep voice startled me. My eyes flew open to find Adrian standing a few feet away, his expression unreadable as always. Great. Just what I needed—the man I was desperately attracted to witnessing my moment of weakness.
"I—" My voice cracked embarrassingly. I cleared my throat and tried again. "It's nothing."
Adrian raised an eyebrow. "It doesn't look like nothing."
