Athilda's pov
I played a soft lullaby for children to help Baby Jeco fall asleep. I had just taken a blood sample from him before his mum left the room.
"Hmmm~" I hummed along quietly, watching him. He is just one year old and battling dengue. His platelet count is dangerously low and has not improved yet, so we are keeping him under close observation.
His eyes were starting to close. I smiled. He looked so peaceful. I really hope he gets better soon.
I stayed seated beside him while he lay there resting, but then the door creaked open.
I turned around and smiled politely, until I realised who it was.
Ugh. Of course, it had to be him. Why is this annoying man here again?
"What are you doing here? As far as I know, Dr. Agasi is Baby Jeco's attending doctor," I said, raising a brow.
"Well, I am not here for the baby. I came to get my wallet. Where is it?" Enzo replied, his voice, serious.
I sighed and let out a short laugh. "Oh please, how would I know, beb?"
"Stop calling me that," he snapped. "I know I left my wallet at your condo."
He bit his lower lip and ran a hand through his hair. Yep, frustrated again, as usual.
"Shh! Lower your voice, idiot. Fine, I will give it to you later. But get out of here first, you are loud. If you wake up Baby Jeco, you will regret it."
I glared at him and spoke in a hushed tone.
"Where are you going later tonight?" he asked suddenly.
What kind of question is that? Totally unrelated. Why does he want to know?
"What's it to you? Why do you need to know?" I replied, annoyed. "Don't tell me you plan to crash at my place again. You leech."
I could feel my blood boiling. Just the sight of him pisses me off these days. Ever since he led me on, I cannot stand being around him.
"Relax. Of course not," he said with a laugh. "Your mum and dad, Aunt Alaine and uncle Mike, invited me to dinner at your mansion."
Wait. What? Why would my parents invite him?
"Since when did you get close to them?" I asked, stunned.
"My dad and uncle Mike are best friends," he replied casually.
What the hell?! I did not know that. First, I find out Enzo was my sister's ex, and now our parents are best friends? How is it that I'm the last to know about all of this?
"What?!" I blurted out, just as Baby Jeco started crying beside me.
I groaned and smacked my forehead. "Ugh! You're such a pain!"
I sighed and went over to calm Baby Jeco down.
"Shhh, baby. It's okay. I'll make you some milk," I said gently, then gave Enzo another glare before heading to prepare the bottle.
I rushed to prepare Baby Jeco's milk because his crying was getting louder, but just as I was about to shake the bottle, he suddenly stopped crying. I turned around and saw Enzo already beside him.
He was holding Baby Jeco in his arms and adjusting his dextrose like it was second nature. His face was calm, serious and focused.
Wow. Why did he look so cute? No, hot, while carrying a baby? He looked like he was born for this. He had that full-on daddy energy. Confident, and caring.
Then he looked at me, and I quickly looked away. Oh no. I got caught staring. How embarrassing. Great, here comes another wave of cringe.
I walked over, trying to sound casual. "Give him to me. I'll take care of Jeco. You can go back to work."
I reached for the baby, but he pulled back gently.
"He'll wake up," he said in a low voice.
I sighed. "I know you're busy, so just hand him over. I can handle it."
"I'm not busy," he replied. "Just be quiet so he stays asleep."
He raised an eyebrow at me while keeping his voice calm.
"Fine," I muttered, rolling my eyes as I sat down on the couch in the private room.
I could not leave anyway. Jeco's mum trusted me to watch over him. Even if Enzo was here, I still had to stay.
I pulled out my phone and pretended to scroll, but from the corner of my eye, I kept sneaking glances at him.
It was quiet in the room, except for the hum of the air conditioner.
A few minutes later, Enzo gently placed Baby Jeco back on the bed and fixed the IV line just as the door opened.
Jeco's mum walked in.
"Good afternoon, Doc," she greeted Enzo with a respectful nod before turning to me.
"Thank you so much for watching over him. Here, I brought some cheesecake for you."
She handed me a small box.
"Oh, you didn't have to! Thank you!" I smiled at her, touched by the gesture.
"Well, we'll head out first," she said.
I do not know what got into me, but I suddenly grabbed Enzo by the hand and dragged him out of the room with me.
Once we were in the hallway, I snapped back to my senses and quickly let go. He was grinning now.
"Trying to hold my hand? Bold move," he teased.
"Ugh! You wish! Don't flatter yourself." I turned to walk away, but he grabbed my hand again and pulled me close.
"It's lunchtime. Let's eat," he said casually, tugging me along.
"Hey, I already have plans. I'm eating with Babypi…"
"Say one more word, and I'll kiss you right here," he interrupted, narrowing his eyes slightly. "Let's see how fast people start talking."
My jaw dropped. "Are you blackmailing me?!"
We stopped walking. He faced me, looking serious, and confused, I could not figure him out anymore. Then, out of nowhere, I felt something warm press against my lips.
My eyes widened. The cheesecake box slipped from my hands and hit the floor. Damn it. That taste. His lips. That stupid, familiar taste that makes my knees feel weak. He pulled back slowly, smirking like he owned the world. I looked around in panic.
A few nurses and doctors were nearby… and unfortunately, a couple of patients too.
They definitely saw us. Some were smiling. Others were whispering. Ugh! Public display of affection in front of half the hospital?
"You're so red. Cutie," Enzo said, laughing softly.
My brows knitted together. "Damn you, Enzo Ezra!" I snapped before storming off down the hallway.
Then my phone buzzed. 2 unread messages from Mom.
"Hey Ath, come home for dinner tonight. Stay here at the house. We have a guest tonight."
"He's the son of your dad's best friend. I want you to meet him. I'm sure you two will get along."
