## Chapter 40: Escape and the Unexpected Return
---
As soon as the auction ended, Lux received the captive Elfess. She was still bound by mana restraints. He had to leave the black market quickly before any further trouble arose.
On the way back to his temporary hideout, the Elfess was silent, but Lux felt her presence. She was calm, perhaps due to the restraints preventing her from using her abilities.
When they reached a relatively safe place, a dark and forgotten alley, Lux began to remove the mana-suppressing restraints from the Elfess's hands. The restraints were tight, but with Lux's strength and the tattooed sword, he managed to break them with relative ease.
The moment she was freed from the restraints, mana surged from the Elfess's body with immense power, as if it had been confined for a long time. The Elfess raised her head, her blue eyes now gleaming with restored mana power.
"What is your name?" Lux asked, his eyes fixed on her.
"I am Evelyn," the Elfess replied in a soft voice, yet carrying a tone of fear and confusion. "Why did you save me?"
"Because you are not a commodity to be sold," Lux said coldly. "And because you possess power that could be useful. You are free now."
Evelyn looked at Lux, then at the dark alley around her. She was free, but she didn't know where to go. The human world was strange and terrifying for her. She had no shelter, no place to go.
As she pondered her fate, Evelyn heard approaching voices. It was a group of black market traders who had lost the bid, and they had tracked her.
"That Elfess is ours!" one of them shouted, brandishing their weapons. "Hand her over, stranger, or you'll regret it!"
Lux felt anger. He wouldn't allow anyone to harm a free being.
As Evelyn trembled in fear, trapped between Lux and the black market traders, problems she wasn't prepared for escalated.
Lux intervened at the perfect moment. With a swift strike of his tattooed sword, Lux unleashed a wave of dark energy that sent the black market traders flying, making them flee in terror.
Evelyn looked at Lux in astonishment. He had saved her again.
"You still don't know where to go, do you?" Lux asked, his eyes staring at her.
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"Then come with me," Lux said. "I have a safe place for you. And a place where you can be strong."
Lux extended his hand towards Evelyn. The Elfess was hesitant, but she felt a mysterious power from this man, a power she had never known before. He had saved her twice. And perhaps this was her destiny.
What will Evelyn's addition mean for Lux's organization? And how will she adapt to this new world?
