After the welcome dinner, Magnus had spent his time training with the squad , this was to put them in sync with each other, they would be fighting side by side soon .
It was a great experience for Magnus but he didn't want it to be that way. He preferred solitude rather than wasting time laughing and chatting after training when he could be doing something more , so he did .
For a month after the welcome dinner, Magnus had been prepping something special that may or may not get him a kind of passive income .
He had bought some barley and malt grains from the market and had started fermentation by adding yeast to the grain mixed with water to break down the sugar and cause the production of alcohol.
When he was sure that fermentation was complete, he then proceeded to distill the product. This produced ethanol, methanol and the drinkable white dog which was another name for an unaged spirit.
But he was lost for time and needed to get the test product out so he decided that the next best thing was to infuse the alcohol with a cherry flavor and an apple flavor during a month long aging process which was to short for making a market legal whiskey but he was not on his earth anymore, he was not bound under the constraints of its rules anymore.
After he was done , he had come out with a total of ten liters divided into four categories, the plain drink that was not infused with anything, the drink infused with cherry and apple, the drink infused with only cherry and the drink infused with only apple.
He packed them all separately in different flasks and took them with him when he went to the squad gym for the daily training.
They had to make Magnus as combat ready as possible so that they could begin taking missions.
After the days training, Magnus brought out the flasks and presented them before the group .
" Hey guys remember when I asked you about alcohol two months ago , please have a taste and tell me what you think ."
They all eyed the flasks suspiciously but Anas always the first through the fray picked up the flask containing the apple and cherry infused drink and poured a little bit of it into his drinking cup before sipping it .
His first reaction was from the burning of the pure alcoholic content both on his tongue and in his throat. Then he could finally taste the flavor from the fruits clashing with the bitter alcohol.
This was not like the regular ale that they drank , this was something else.
Magnus could see Anas face go through a series of different emotions . From grimacing to actually nodding to understand the taste.
" This doesn't taste like the alcohol I know, it's too strong and it burns. " Anas said but before long he had finished a flask and had become buzzed, he had even started to slurr his words .
This was when the squad mates noticed that this was no ordinary alcoholic beverages, it was rare to see Anas who could drink pint after pint of ale buzzed after just a few cups of this wine .
So each of them filled their cups and took a sip expressing the same facial expression as Anas . But they said nothing and just enjoyed the drinks.
It was until the next day that Magnus knew that they were hooked on it , the buzz that they felt was unlike anything they had felt and they wanted to feel that way again.
" Hey kid , do you still have some of that drink you gave us yesterday?" Johnathan asked .
" Yes i do, so you need some ?"
" Of course quickly get me some."
" I could provide it for you for just one hundred tokens." Magnus replied.
Tokens were the universal currency of this world , it was their type of paper money with special engravings which made them hard to counterfeit.
One hundred tokens was the price of five jars of ale and the flask that Magnus was using for storage was less than half of what a jar of ale was .
He was still thinking that there was going to be some haggling but Johnathan readily paid the one hundred tokens and took the drink .
By the end of the day Magnus has sold off his entire stash and had gained five hundred tokens.
As a new recruit, his monthly stipend was five thousand tokens and within a day , he had made ten percent of his monthly stipend.
He knew that soon , word would spread and he would have to satisfy the need of his consumers .
So he started the distillation process for the rest of his brew , adding the fruit extracts to make it less harsher because of its unaged nature.
As this was happening, a little trouble was brewing outside Berlin . In a small town named Dresden a portal had broken through and thousands of goblins rushed out attacking people. This was a farming town so most of the people who lived there were regular farmers without abilities. Only a few mages were stationed in the town to protect the interests of the five organizations .
They stood their ground and fought alongside the townfolk but they were eventually overrun.
It was only after a week when a transport carriage came into town for the farm products that people noticed that the entire town was overrun with monsters.
The matter was quickly reported to the conclave and a decision was quickly made. Each organization was to send fifty mages each for a joint operation to clear the town of monsters and close the portal.
The reason for this joint operation was that the town was one of the major food production hub for the city and without it chaos will take over.
The organizations all sprung into action selecting recruits to go on this mission. One could have asked why recruits were sent instead of veterans who could solve the problem immediately.
The answers were profit and training, profit in the sense that these recruits have not had much resources invested in them and this made them more disposable than the veterans who were the backbone of each organization. Also a goblin raid was not profitable enough to use veterans and they also wanted to use this as an opportunity to train the recruits in real combat.
This was going to be Magnus' reality for the next couple of days.
