It was just a quiet Wednesday morning, Magnus had stayed awake overnight, running his makeshift distillery in his kitchen. He had just completed the last batch of the fermented products and had placed up another batch of corn and wheat for fermentation when he heard a knock on the door .
When he opened it , he came face to face with the clan guards . These were the most brutal mages in the clan and they were in front of Magnus' door .
" You are the recruit Magnus." It was a statement not a question.
" Yes ." Magnus replied.
Without saying a word , the guard motioned for him to follow.
Magnus didn't waste time and followed the men quietly like a lamb going off to slaughter.
He was led to an auditorium filled with people. He noticed that the people there were in his age range which meant that they were like him whi recently awakened .
" Hello recruits, I am Captain Kyle and I will be your leader for your goblin subjugating mission."
Suddenly the room burst out into murmurs , Magnus has been there for at least three months but some of them had been there for less than a month without any combat skills.
Despite all the murmuring, Magnus could see the captain, looking down on them like ants , his face devoid of any emotions .
It was as if they were not even worth his time.
" Enough ! " The captain shouted . " Prepare yourselves, we leave before sunrise tomorrow morning."
Despite Magnus having connections with a violent organization in the past , he still felt jitters. Perhaps it was because he found himself in a strange world or something else . But throughout the day he was distracted, he hadn't seen monsters before and didn't know what to expect.
He couldn't even sleep well at night and by the next morning he had dark circles under his eye .
The recruits were then ordered to board wagons that would transport them to Dresden. The journey would take eight hours and the battle could even start before they reached their destination.
Magnus then used the opportunity to get some sleep he wouldn't let tiredness to be the cause of his death on the battlefield, it was nessesary for him to keep a calm and alert mind before the mission.
" All right get off now all of you we have arrived." Magnus was suddenly jolted out of his sleep, he could swear he had only closed his eyes for five minutes.
He was standing around dazed and confused but a push from one of the recruits jolted him back to reality.
" Alright maggots, make your way to the weapons selection area and pick up a suitable weapon that would accompany you for this mission." Kyle screamed out in a loud voice.
The recruits wanting to get an advantage immediately rushed to select their weapons sometimes tripping over themselves.
But Magnus stood there waiting, it made no difference the kind of weapons he chose, he has little experience with any of them . It was after they had all selected the flashy equipment that Magnus was able to select something.
His weapon of choice was a round sheild completely made out of steel , a spear and a short sword.
His reason for this weapon selection was that the shield could offer a level of protection for him , the spear could provide the range that he needed and the sword was just a secondary weapon.
He got the idea from the ancient Roman and he Greek weaponry for their infantry and decided to adopt the techniques . He was not stupid, he could slash and stab . Any other skill was non existent.
Soon they arrived at the town entrance. From a distance they could see some of the goblins struggling over human remains, Skulls and bones could be seen hanging from a pole with dried blood all over them .
He could also see the members of the other organizations lining up and receiving orders from their captains. He noticed that the other organizations followed the same style of using recruits as the fighting force .
They had the same objectives but it was clear that they were not here to cooperate with each other but rather endure each other's presence long enough to complete their objectives.
" Alright, as you can see your objective is to defeat the goblins plaguing this town." Captain Kyle said to the recruits clutching their weapons tightly. " Also , clan leader has promised to give all survivors a bonus of one thousand tokens."
As soon as he said that , the recruits wanting to finish the mission and receive their bonuses rushed into the town screaming frantically.
The goblins spooked by this sound also rushed in droves towards the recruits snarling.
Magnus could see the greenish brow skins of the goblins as they rushed over in thousands and with the way the recruits were rushing in with no coordination, he knew that they were bound to be casualties.
He also believed that captain Kyle shared the same thoughts, Magnus saw him looking at the battlefield coldly, clearly disappointed.
Magnus could be seen walking towards the town. He was not walking slowly but he was steady in his step . He needed to conserve energy in case he needed to escape for his life.
He was also using this as an opportunity to check the fighting capabilities of the goblins.
They possessed human level strength and were not great with tactics either. But what they lacked in coordination they gained by using their numbers as a weapon. One could even call that battle tactics.
He could see the recruits clash with the goblins, slashing and cutting them up as they went. Their strength was clearly higher but the the numbers of the goblins seemed to be the main issue.
Magnus started thinking about guns , if he had an assault rifle or a machine gun , he could wipe out most of these goblins while conserving stamina.
But that wasn't his personal mission, Magnus had been thinking, the occupants of this town were mostly dead and some of them were still captured by the enemy. And in a town housing thousands of people, there has to be money lying around. As disrespectful as it would seem , Magnus' mission was to rob the homes of these people, he needed to get investments to scale up his operation .
