ADELINE

My heart jumps. He brought me back?

I try to sit up, but my ribs protest. Pain shoots through my spine, yet it's nothing compared to the fragile hope trembling in my chest.

He came for me yesterday. He didn't leave me to die.

I swing my legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the sting, and pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders.

His jacket still rests on the chair, discarded carelessly like he always does. There's a barely drunk glass of wine on the side table.

A smile dares to bloom on my lips.

Maybe… Maybe he does care.

Determination blooms in my chest. I want to tell him everything I haven't said to another soul. How Dad used to treat me, what his orders were, what he threatened me with…

Even if he doesn't believe me, I just want to try.

My feet pads against the cold floor as I stand but I have barely taken a step when—
