Chapter 12

ADELINE

It's been two days since they locked me up in this cold, dark prison.

Or maybe three.

I've lost track of the time. My head keeps spinning, and my vision's blurry half the time.

Sometimes I see clearly. Other times, it's like everything fades in and out.

The sound of footsteps echoes in the empty corridor, growing louder.

I know who is coming here, the person has been my only visitor since they imprisoned me here.

I straighten up, forcing my back off the wall. There is no way I will let myself look weak…

"Have you decided to confess or not?" Julia's voice cuts through the silence.

She leans against the wall like she's bored, arms crossed like this is just some casual conversation.

I don't look at her.

When they locked me up, I expected warriors to be sent to interrogate me. Maybe even torture. But no, of course, it had to be Julia. My own cousin.

The heavy metal door creaks open.
