Chapter Fifty-two

My heart stopped beating as Lorenzo and Cecilia entered the study. I’d wanted to see excitement in her beautiful eyes. I’d been caught up in the victory of saving her from her father and from Jethro and stupidly spoken to Lorenzo about a union.

It was premature to say the least. Cecilia and I didn’t really know one another and yet when I was with her, I felt as if we’d known one another for a lifetime. Maybe we had. It was my third life and once she became a part of it, I’d finally begun to live.

For a fleeting moment, I’d believed in her childish dream. I’d let her zest for life infect my non-beating heart. Her strength and determination gave me reason to believe in miracles—in childish dreams. That was what it would take for a woman like Cecilia Abernathy to accept my proposal.

The one thing I asked of Lorenzo was for the decision to be hers and hers alone. If she said yes and he agreed, I wouldn’t be entering the Dellinger family emptyhanded.
