I woke up before my alarm.
Bright and energetic, like I was running late for the final exams.
I didn't even realize how fast I grabbed my bag, tied my shoes, and walked into the hall.
"Mommmmm! Breakfast! Fast fast I'm late!"
From the kitchen, came her usual calm, confused voice."Late? For what, ra? I just started boiling milk."
I frowned. "College, Mom! Why else do I look like Am I going for a wedding?"
She came out, holding her ladle like a weapon of wisdom."Mindless fellow! Today is Sunday! What college, ha? Will you go and listen imaginary classes."
I stood there like someone slapped me with a timetable.
I quickly pulled out my phone yep. Sunday. Loud and clear.
All I could say was, "Shhh…" and awkwardly slide back to my room like a thief caught in daylight.
Changed into shorts. No more hero today.
Sat with my books, trying to revise a few topics. But I wasn't able to stop laughing.
What's wrong with me? I thought. Since when did I start loving college so much that I forgot weekends exist?
And right on cue—Ting! WhatsApp group woke up.
Mass Bunking Batch
Vicky:"Mission accomplished. We successfully pranked Surya Bhai!"
Vinod:"Bro left for college like he was writing semester exams"
Raju:"Silent tears. But powerful entry"
Me:"What?! Why me??"
Sreeja:"Don't feel special. It's just that you were online at 6:30 AM… we saw opportunity"
Out of Curiosity I asked.
"Why everyone was absent yesterday? At least by mistake one person will come right."
Pavan:"And besides… we're just following the IT company culture."
Me:"What?"
Vicky:"Yes sir. Weekly two offs. Training for future IT job. Saturdays and random Mondays are declared holidays."
I stared at the screen and shook my head, smiling.
"You guys are mad. Utter mindless people."
Vinod:"Say that again and we'll make your wedding card too as a prank."
Even through the screen, their madness felt like home.
"Fine. But next time, inform me before your IT-inspired holidays. Today was hell."
And just like that, the rest of the day flew by memes, fake resumes for Vinod's samosa addiction.
Sundays are basically for my peace of mind.
These pieces made this Sunday a crazy comedy movie.
That night, I went to the terrace.
Looked up at that star.
"Chandu… what a bunch of idiots I've found," I whispered.
"They bunk college to practice for jobs that don't exist yet…They prank me, mock me, but somehow, I smile."
The star flickered.
"They make the silence lighter, Chandu. They make this life… feel like not so tough."
Next day, I stepped into college. Everyone was back.
We attended classes, cracked jokes on lecturers who repeated the same line five times.
We laughed under our bench.
College fest preparations had already begun, and because of that, classes were broken.
Unplanned breaks became our regulars.
We bunked an hour, sat in the canteen with cold samosas and warm hearts.
Someone asked about our families.
Vinod went first shared about his grandma who still doesn't know he passed 12th.
Vicky said his father is a strict officer, and he has to act like topper at home.
Raju didn't say much. Just smiled. Like always.
Sreeja shared how she handles two younger siblings, studies, and still manages to top the class.
Then they looked at me.
I said, "Mine is… fine. Everything's good at home."
No one asked further. No one needed to.
Because true friends… they hear even the unsaid.
