The night had grown darker. The silence of the forest felt even heavier now, as if something was hiding behind every tree. Ryu walked at the front, his eyes scanning every tree, every faint mark on the leaves. Kael followed close behind, his sword ready in his grip, while Elira was quietly controlling her breathing, as if trying to calm herself.
The rustling of leaves suddenly grew louder for a moment. Ryu stopped. His hand rose slightly into the air, a signal. Kael immediately froze, tightening his grip on his sword. Elira's fingers clutched her basket even tighter.
Ryu spoke softly,
"They're here."
And in the next moment, shadows moved behind the trees. A short whistle echoed, and suddenly men emerged from all sides, stepping out from behind the trees. Around ten of them – armed with daggers, swords, and bows. Their leader, a man with a large scar across his face, stood holding an old axe.
The scarred man grinned and said,
"Well, boys, look what we've found… a guy, a girl, and a swordsman. Tonight's our lucky night."
Kael stepped forward, raising his sword.
"Don't make a mistake. Turn back now."
The leader laughed, swinging his axe lazily.
"The mistake is yours, little hunter. We've seen plenty like you… all ended up scattered as blood among the leaves."
Kael glanced at Ryu, but Ryu stood completely calm, expressionless, as if none of this meant anything to him.
Elira looked at Ryu nervously and whispered,
"What… should we do?"
Ryu turned his gaze to her, giving a faint, cold smile.
"Just stay behind."
The next moment happened so fast no one had time to react. Three bandits lunged straight at Kael. Kael blocked one strike with his sword, slammed the second with the flat of his blade, but the third tried to slip in behind him.
And then…
Ryu simply stepped forward. His hand moved so fast there was only a faint whisper of sound. The bandit's arm… hit the ground, severed from his body. Before he could even scream, Ryu pressed a blade to his throat and silenced him in an instant.
Two more bandits charged at Ryu, but without even looking at them, he caught their swords between two fingers, snapped the blades with a flick, and sent both crashing to the ground within seconds.
The leader watched all this, his face turning pale. He shouted desperately to his men,
"He's… he's not human! Kill him!"
Ryu calmly walked toward him. His face remained serene, but his eyes carried a depth – as if he was looking from somewhere far away, from another time.
Stopping right in front of the leader, Ryu said softly,
"You picked the wrong day."
And in the next instant, Ryu's hand moved. The leader's axe hit the ground with a dull thud, and his body fell backward, lifeless. The forest fell silent once more.
Kael lowered his sword, staring at Ryu, shock written all over his face.
"What… what was that? You… you just—"
Ryu looked at him and gave a small, casual smile.
"This was just the beginning."
Elira stood silently, her hands trembling slightly. She looked at Ryu, and Ryu turned to her, giving that same faint smile as if everything was normal.
But behind that smile… another face was hidden. A face silently asking itself – "Am I becoming who I used to be?"
The night forest returned to its quiet, but mixed with the leaves on the ground now was something else – the scent of blood.
