14. Shadows in the Marketplace", "A Deal or a Trap?

The morning sun slowly rose above the trees, but beneath the thick canopy of the forest, a cool chill still lingered. Ryu, Elira, and Kael had finished their night's journey and now stood at the edge of a small hill.

Below them lay a city—surrounded by tall walls, with narrow winding streets and a bustling marketplace in the center, where smoke and the aroma of spices drifted through the air.

Kael adjusted the sword on his shoulder and said quietly,

"Finally, a place where we can breathe easy."

Ryu looked toward the city, his face as calm as ever.

"Peace… let's see how long it lasts."

Elira glanced at Ryu and gave him a small, hopeful smile, as if trying to stay positive.

"At least we'll get good food here."

Ryu looked at her and gave a faint smile as they started walking.

"Let's find out."

---

Inside the city, the market was alive with energy. People shouted, children played, and vendors called out to customers in loud, cheerful voices. Elira's eyes sparkled as she took it all in—she hadn't seen anything like this in a long time.

She stopped near a stall selling sweets. Ryu came up beside her, glancing at the colorful treats. Elira looked at him, hesitant.

"These… look good."

Without saying a word, Ryu pulled out a small pouch of coins and handed them to the vendor. Elira looked at him in surprise.

"Ryu… you—"

Ryu simply handed her a piece of the sweet and started walking again.

"The journey's long. A little sweetness doesn't hurt."

A small smile appeared on Elira's face.

Kael, walking behind them, sighed in irritation.

"Just what I needed… a love story while I play bodyguard."

Ryu glanced back at him.

"Bodyguard? We'd be fine without you. You can always go back to the forest if you want."

Kael snorted but said nothing.

As they reached the center of the marketplace, a faint sound broke through the noise—like something rustling above. Ryu stopped, his face instantly serious.

A shadow leaped down from the rooftops, landing lightly in front of them. A man dressed in all black, his face half-covered by a mask, and eyes glinting with that mischievous rogue-like smile. A small dagger glinted in his hand.

He stood right in front of Ryu and chuckled.

"So, you're the one… the one who stole my hunt in the forest last night."

Kael immediately gripped his sword, and Elira took a step back. Ryu simply stared into the rogue's eyes.

The rogue spun his dagger lazily and gave a small, mocking bow.

"My name is Saren. I have some business with you… and maybe you have some with me as well."

Ryu's expression didn't change, his voice calm as ever.

"Business? Or betrayal?"

Saren chuckled, the half-mask making his face look even more mysterious.

"Time will tell."

At his words, the people in the market instinctively stepped back, sensing something was about to happen. Ryu glanced briefly at Elira, then back at Saren…

That familiar calm smile returned to his face—but his steps moved slightly forward.
