15. Whispers in the Marketplace – The Rogue’s Offer

The marketplace had gone completely silent. People had backed away to a safe distance, hawkers hid behind their stalls, and children clung tightly to their mothers' clothes. In the center stood only two figures – Ryu and Saren. One calm, the other wearing a devilish grin.

Saren twirled his dagger, his entire body moving with a strange rhythm, like a dancer waiting for the perfect moment to make his next move.

"So, you're Ryu. I've heard a lot about you… but I want to see for myself if you're really as good as they say, or just rumors."

Ryu stood perfectly still, that same calm smile on his face.

"And what if I really am exactly what they say?"

Saren chuckled beneath his mask and, with a swift lunge, darted straight at Ryu. His first strike was so fast that the dagger whistled through the air, but Ryu simply shifted his step slightly to the side, and the blade didn't even brush a thread of his clothes.

Elira stepped back, gripping her basket tightly. Kael drew his sword, but Ryu raised his hand slightly, stopping him.

"Don't interfere."

Saren landed back on his feet, spinning lightly on his heel before smirking.

"Interesting… you dodged my first strike without even making a real move."

Ryu shrugged slightly.

"That was just your warm-up."

A flicker of excitement shone in Saren's eyes as he lunged again, faster this time – his dagger sweeping low, then whipping upward in one fluid motion. But Ryu simply extended his hand and caught the dagger between two fingers, stopping it mid-swing.

Saren's eyes widened in surprise.

"This… I've only seen this once before… just once."

Ryu released his grip and spoke in a low, steady voice.

"You're going to see a lot more."

The next movement was so fast that even Saren didn't have time to react. Ryu stepped forward, stopping his fingers just a breath away from Saren's throat, making it clear he could crush his windpipe at any moment.

Saren stared into his eyes for a brief moment before stepping back and laughing softly.

"Alright… I admit it. You're more dangerous than the rumors say."

Ryu's calm gaze didn't change.

"Now tell me what you really want."

Saren's smirk returned beneath his mask.

"What I want? I have an offer for you… but it's not something I'll say in front of a crowd. Meet me tonight at the old west gate. If you don't… I might have to come looking for you."

With that, Saren leaped up onto the rooftops, vanishing in seconds. The marketplace slowly came back to life as people exhaled in relief.

Kael lowered his sword and said angrily,

"We can't trust that rogue."

Ryu glanced at him, his tone calm.

"I don't trust anyone. But there's something to learn from every rogue."

Elira looked at Ryu with concern in her eyes.

"Tonight… you'll still go, won't you?"

Ryu looked at her and gave a faint smile.

"I always go."

And within that smile… was the same hidden pain only he knew.
