The city looked completely different at night. The bazaar lights had slowly gone out, and only a few torches flickered faintly in the alleys. Near the west gate, there was an old stone bridge, beyond which the dark forest began.
Ryu stood there. His face gleamed slightly under the moonlight, but his eyes held the same calm and slightly weary depth as always.
After a while, a shadow leapt down from the trees. Saren. His mask was still on his face, but this time, his movements carried less mischief and more of a contemplative air.
Saren stood before him and let out a slight chuckle.
"I thought you wouldn't come."
Ryu simply looked at him and replied calmly,
"Whatever this is about, say it quickly."
Saren spun his dagger and tossed it onto the grass between them, as if signaling that he wasn't here to fight.
"Alright then. I have a deal for you. I know you're just passing through this city… but there's something here that will bother you too."
Ryu's eyes stayed fixed on him.
"What?"
Saren stepped a little closer and spoke quietly, as if not wanting anyone else to overhear.
"For the past two weeks, people have been disappearing under the old catacombs of the city. I don't think these are simple kidnappings… something else is going on. And I saw you in the forest— the way you fight… I need a partner."
Ryu's expression didn't change.
"I'm not your partner."
Saren chuckled under his mask.
"Not a partner… let's just call it a temporary contract. You need to know who's taking these people. If they reach the forest, they'll become an obstacle in your journey."
Ryu was silent for a moment, then finally said,
"Where will I find the way into the catacombs at night?"
A smirk appeared on Saren's face.
"I thought you'd refuse. But you're just as curious as I am."
Ryu looked directly at him.
"Not curiosity. Just necessity."
Saren shrugged.
"Then tomorrow night, meet me behind the old church in the city. That's where the passageways open."
Ryu gave a slight nod and turned to leave.
Elira and Kael were waiting for him a little farther away. As Ryu returned, Elira looked at him, worry in her eyes.
"Ryu… is everything alright? That rogue… do you trust him?"
Ryu looked at her and replied quietly,
"I don't trust anyone. But sometimes, only through the enemy's path can you see the enemy's true face."
Elira fell silent. Kael gripped his sword and said angrily,
"Just be careful… if he betrays you, I'll cut his throat myself."
Ryu glanced at him with a faint smile.
"There'll be no need to cut his throat… if he betrays me, nothing will stop me."
And under the moonlight, for a brief moment, that old cold glint flickered in his eyes— the same one that only a player, willing to do anything to win, could have.
